Abuse of mod privileges on Biology and Medicine

As a user who has been following the large pharmacy thread on Biology and Medicine I have to complain about the abuse of moderator privileges by a number of mods. I have not gotten involved by posting in the thread (I don't want to risk a ban for holding an opposing view) but a number of reasonable posters have been banned for simply disagreeing with the mods points of view or the political view opinionated in their sig

The mod tallaght01 seems to be the most abusive of his/her privilege.

this is already being discussed in two helpdesk threads.

that thread is a long and complicated one, and by its nature will attract people with strongly held views about a sensitive topic.

being in the science forum, it has been populated with a lot of pharmacists.

we were glad to have non-pharmacists contributing to the debate, to provide the opposing viewpoints and discussion.

moderation in this forum has traditionally been quite easy going and relaxed.

when people (and i mean timrobbins) started posting inflammatory comments, and generally trolling, we took a relatively relaxed view initially - editing posts and warning him, rather than coming down hot and heavy with infractions and bans.

however, he persistently ignored warnings and continued to post in teh same manner.

this lead to a discussion between us mods and it was then decided to ban him.

there have been other contributors to that thread who hold anti-pharmacy views, and who debated with teh pharmacists and mods in the thread, but who did so ina civil and reasonable manner. those people were not banned, as there was no need for them to be. (smccarrick, nesf, carsinian thou)

the new arrival to the thread today who posted two criticisms of moderator decisions in the thread was banned ofr doing just that - derailing teh thread complaining about mod decisions. this is a site wide policy.

Anyone can get involved unless they are actively trolling. This applies to any forum and any thread.

But. Imagine you are at a pub. There is a big table of about 20-30 people all debating something. The "mods" invited everyone out - so they guide the conversation and people follow that happily - its a bit of banter. Some people are friends, some people are friends of friends. Everyone is chatting and at times arguing. Someone is rude and is verbally abusive to another person there - is it wrong to tell them to tone it down for the the sake of the group and then finally when all else fails - to exclude them?

Diarmuid - you're the guy standing alone at the bar listening in and complaining to the bar manager that we shouldn't be allowed to be there and chatting.

This applies to all forums, not just Bio/Med. Tallaght01 has never banned anyone without consulting all mods beforehand.

You are totally misrepresenting the tone of that thread. It wasn't a bit of happy banter until Tim came along. It was a bunch of like minded individuals ranting (or worse) against a common unrepresented "enemy" (HSE+Harney)
