Houseboat in Amsterdam

So, we are going to Amsterdam in September and were thinking of staying on a houseboat. Has anyone stayed in one before and what was it like? One of our friends is being really picky about where we stay, convinced that it will be a rat infested crack hole.

I've never stayed in one, but I have seen a few. Some were pretty grotty and some were very plush.

It sounds like a lot more fun than staying in a hotel, although you might not want to be too close to the busy late night spots as you might not sleep too well.
