    hey all,

i'm trying to fix a laptop for a girl that comes into the shop here.

from what i understand her brother tried to remove norton and in doing so deleted loads of .exe files.

and after she restarted it she has been unable to locate any of her documents or media she had stored on it.

i've done a few different searches and the like and havbent been able to locate them as yet.

but the still appear as occuping the hard drive (when you right click on the c;\ drive)

also intermittent missing .dll errors appear as you use the laptop.

upon scouring the net i see others have encountered the same problem. but the solutions offered in these cases involve expensive software or hard drive recovery "experts" i reckon it must be salvagable without resorting to this and the customer doesnt have the money to shell out for this anyways as she was planning to buy a new laptop anyways and really just needs the data to be retrieved to put onto the new one.

anyways if anyone has any ideas pleas let me know i;ve downloaded a couple of free softwares which i will be trying in the meantime.

    cheers in advance.

Are you sure he didn't delete her files?
Can you do a system restore?

If there is another disk partition (D: ) install any recovery software on that. If not I highly reccomend taking out the disk and running a recovery scan from another pc with the drive attached, as the more you install on the same partition the greater the chance of overwriting files making recovery impossible, especially if the drive is nearing full.

Download Reccuva I think it is the best current free recovery tool and do a deep scan.

i asked her the same and she said its teh same occupied disk space as before.

she tried the system restore already and no joy.

i'm thinking he deleted an os file and its unable to locate the files within itself.
