    Driving into work this morning
    Doing around 60mph
NExt thing I hear a noise from the car that sounded like there was an airplane directly overhead (there wasnt)
The noise continued for about 30 secs then it got quieter but didnt go away until I pulled in
I checked the tyres, they are fine and at right pressure
    No noise now
ANyone got any idea ... bearings ?

Hard to say really. Yeah it could be a wheel bearing?

i thought though a bearing on the way out would make a grinding noise, this was def not grinding
but your right, tis hard to know

As the noise has gone away now, it couldn't really be a bearing as they don't self heal. Once they're that noisy, they won't go quiet again.

Something like a stone lodged in the brake maybe?

Also make sure to check under the hood that all the belts (fan, water pump, PAS, AC) are still in one piece and running properly.

Ya, i had a quick look there too and couldnt see anything wrong, no smell of burning
I'll put it down to a lodged stone for now (fingers crossed)

Sounds to me like you drove over a traffic cone/cat/cyclist.

sometimes if you drive close to the line on middle of the road the road surface is raised and interacts with some tyres which makes a very loud whining plane like noise just to prevent you from going over the line,
this happened me before and i thought my car was fckud :)

saw that happen on a hyundai coupe and it was a seized brake piston front.
red hot components expanding and causing high friction betweeen the disk and pad.

WAS it just an overhead plane?
