Competition Advice

Hi all, just wondering if I could get some advice... I have played lot of golf this summer and have just joined a golf club. I imagine my handicap to be somewhere in the mid twenties from what I have worked out myself, but need to hand in 3 competition cards from the club to get a GUI Handicap....
So I'm just wondering what format does a club competition take? Do you play with anyone , or is it with people of similar standard. For example, if I was put in a 3 ball with 6 and 8 handicappers, I would clearly slow their round ... considerably, and probably be embarrassed throughout! Thanks!

You can play with any handicap.

    How would you be slow.

If you out of the hole i.e. s/ford and vpar. Just pick up your ball and move onto the next hole.

This can be a big probably with golfers taking 10 shots when they should have picked up a few shots before hand

In my club its all done by open draw or online booking for competitions. So you could be playing with anybody of any ability. The only way around this is to book onto a line with ppl you know are of similar ability. But it would be to you advantage in the long term to play with ppl off single figures, you'll pick up some good tips as you go.

    Best of luck

Are you sure it has to be competitive rounds that count towards getting your card, because usually 3 cards with another member of your club played whenever you like is whats required.
It coud be a requirement by your particular club but I very much doubt it, but if you not sure you can always ask a club official.

agree, i'd play 3 casual rounds with a member instead - less pressure.

Thanks for that... so once I go to 8's and 9's its ok to just pick up? What way is the card marked then? And in competition do I mark another players card... do I need to write their stableford points score after each hole or is that done at the end by someone else?
Yeah I definitely want to play in competition because I know it will probably push me along a bit quicker in terms of learning a bit more.

Your score will be reduced to +2 on each hole you are over. Say if you shoot a 7 on a par 4 then it will be reduced to a 6.

For the purpose of obtaining your card you need to finish out each hole and put your total score down.
Do this with someone you know who understands that you are learning and do it outside of a competition.

My advice would be to read the rules of golf before you enter a competition. Not necessarily the rules, but how each type of competition works (strokes, stableford, vpar etc) and just get a general idea of what you should be doing out there.

Try and clarify with your handicap secretary if you need to play in the competition or can you just play the 3 rounds with a member which would be much more preferable.
As GreeBo said, finish out the holes because this will give the secretary the most information possible about your abilities. Picking up only applies when you have your handicap and are playing a stableford competition and have taken more shots on the hole than “allowed” so there is basically nothing to gain from continuing that hole.
