    Hi All,

Started a job recently and someone pointed out that I should get tax free income as I was on the job seekers/dole for over 6 months? Is that the case?

    Ta. :)

Jobseeker's Benefit is taxable (Jobseeker's Allowance is not). €191.30 of the €204.30 is the taxable amount. So if it was Benefit you have been claiming that will go towards your tax free amount. However if it was Allowance this is tax free.

Basically you have a certain amount of tax credit to use in the year. Usually this is divided by 52 to get your weekly tax free allowance and since you haven't been paying tax for the past 6 months you will have extra credits left over so they will spread them over the rest of the year. It just means you will be able to earn a little more before tax kicks in.

In the first few pays after your new employer is told of your tax credits(*), you are likely to get a larger pay than usual. Be careful not to get used to this amount of income, because once you've used up those credits, normal tax will kick in and the payment will go down again.

(definitely happens after Revenue have processed your 12a, may happen when you give them the P45 from your previous job)
