public order offence court appearance - solicitor needed?

My brother got a summons for being drunk in public and threatening behaviour. He was on his stag and can't remember a thing! He'd gotten separated from the group too so nobody else knows what it is about, he's going to call the Garda and ask him to tell him what happened. He can tell us he didn't wake up in a garda station the day after which is something I suppose.

So none of us have been in court and have any experience of this - does he need a solicitor? Will he get a fine or what?
