A friend of mine has a Rover 75 diesel with the following problem. When driving in traffic that involves a lot of gear changing and clutching the car sometimes refuses to go to gear.if the car is then parked up for 10 or 15 minutes it works perfectly and could go again without a problem for ages. The clutch is relativley new.Would any one have an idea what the problem might be ?Clutch , Master cylinder or something else?

They are a very poorly designed clutch / gearbox arrangement (thanks to BMW not Rover I may add), if the clutch is recent chances are it wasn't done properly / fitted correctly. Get your buddy to take it back and demand it is sorted. Out if interest what was he cgarged for the clutch change, I have heard figures of up to €1800.

He actually done the clutch himself and as he has lots of experience I would imagine it was done right.Saying that the problem wasnt there before the clutch was changed

Does the pedal feel any different after using the clutch alot in traffic? if it does i'd check the master and slave cylinders for leaks...

They're a nightmare of a job, to get the box off you have to remove the front subframe, this means 1/2 the suspension must be disconnected. Did he change the slave when he did the clutch, these are a weak point on the design, thimble sizes fluid reservoir there. As above the slave is probably after leaking.

Yes he changed the slave cylinder when he done the clutch. He has a new master cylinder ordered so we'll see how that goes
