Laptop suddenly slowed down

I installed a wireless USB adaptor onto my laptop on Monday and it was grand. Installed quickly, no hassle. Then yesterday, after I let my sister use my laptop to show the family her wedding pictures on a cd-rom, it just suddenly started going slow. Every time I click on a file, it takes up to 20 seconds to open. I defragmented my laptop, I removed unnecessary files, I even uninstalled the USB adaptor, but it's still slow. This time two days ago, it was working so fast. I even checked how much was on my hard drive and it's only half full, so it's not an overload problem. Can anyone shed some light on what might be wrong? Could a reboot fix this problem?

    What adapter is it?

I notice the linksys USB ones we use at the office eat a lot of Processor time and energy because of the Taskbar utility you need to run them - unfortunately without that utility, the connection becomes grossly unstable :/

Download the moo0 System Monitor (google) and use it to determine whats hogging your ****. in the program, rightclick>Fields>Check off anything with 'loader' in the title - eg. CPU Loader tells you what is taking up all the CPU, HDD loader tells you what is keeping the hard drive busy, etc.

edit: did your sister change the power scheme on you? It may be in Power Saver or something.

is your anti virus and spyware up to date ? sounds like your sisters cd has crap on it. Upadte both run a full scan, also try booting into safe mode and see if there is a diff in perfromance

It sounds like crap was installed on the machine. If using windows, try doing a system restore to sometime last week :) Hopefully should do the trick

Hi saw your problem and i ran in to a similar issue on more than one occasion.

The first the culprit was google taskbar. That thing on the right side of your windows vista desktop. It eats ram among other things.
    Solution uninstall.

The second one was Indexing for every file created no matter how small or insignificant windows attempts to index it so it will be easy find should you want to search for it. This becomes a problem when your system starts producing many many temp files etc.
Solution: I suggest disabling indexing. This will make your search capabilities very slow. So you will have to remember where everything is. Or just run indexing once every so often.

Porbably should of mentioned this at the start but these are for Vista Op system.

Otherwise if you want to find what is slowing your system, Go to task manager and find what is taking up CPu or Virtual Memory.

If you want print an image of the screen here and i will have a look for you.
