Pawn Shops

Has anyone noticed the influx of pawn shops around the place since the recession started?

They always appear in the less affluent parts of towns, right near the head shop and dive bars

I went in to the one in Dundalk today to see how much they'd pay for an electric guitar and there was a guy in front of me trying to flog a ring and necklace

the lad behind the counter was saying that you need a proof of purchase before they can buy stuff off you and the guy said he didn't know where it was, so the assistant went away to talk to the boss and came back and told the guy that they'd only be able to offer him 20 euro for the jewelery

I just walked out of the shop after that, knowing I was gonna be ripped off

These places should be regulated, sure any thieving bastard could walk straight out of someones house with their stuff and into the shop for a quick exchange

    Nasty people

Real pawn shops are licenced. Cash Converters etc are not pawn shops.

Yeah I have notice them popping up aswell.
They seem to be a franchise,I have seen a particular one pop up in 3 different counties.
It doesn't really bode well does it.

There was an alcoholic using a Pawn shop in Dublin, RTE Radio 1's main evening News had a feature on them. Pawns in on a Friday, buys it back whenever. Wedding ring and some other gold baubles if I remember. That person did it every few weeks, with the same items.

Top of Capel street in Dublin is the only one I remember, probably because they have the 3 spheres hanging outside, there used to be one in Dun Laoghaire with that as well.

Ahh Wikipedia, bless.. you learn something new every day.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawnbroker

The pawnbroker's symbol is three spheres suspended from a bar. The three sphere symbol is attributed to the Medici Family of Florence, Italy, owing to its symbolic meaning of Lombard.[1] This refers to the Italian province of Lombardy, where pawn shop banking originated under the name of Lombard banking. The three golden spheres were originally the symbol which medieval Lombard merchants hung in front of their houses, and not the arms of the Medici family. It has been conjectured that the golden spheres were originally three flat yellow effigies of byzants, or gold coins, laid heraldically upon a sable field, but that they were converted into spheres to better attract attention.

Most European towns called the pawn shop the "Lombard". The House of Lombard was a banking family in medieval London, England. According to legend, a Medici employed by Charles the Great slew a giant using three bags of rocks. The three ball symbol became the family crest. Since the Medicis were so successful in the financial, banking, and moneylending industries, other families also adopted the symbol. Throughout the Middle Ages, coats of arms bore three balls, orbs, plates, discs, coins and more as symbols of monetary success. Pawnbrokers (and their detractors) joke that the three balls mean "Two to one, you won't get your stuff back".

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of pawnbrokers. The symbol has also been attributed to the story of Nicholas and the three bags of gold.

That was Brereton's. Local lore was that the three brass balls signified 2 to 1 that you'd never get your stuff back.

I haven't noticed the pawn shops, but what I have noticed is how desperate the television in my house is to purchase and melt down my gold.

When the recession hit the only thing that retained its value was gold. Most people don't realize that though.

A fella got into our back garden one night(fair fcuks to him cause it involves climbing down a sketchy 20ft wall),broke into the shed and stole my fathers golf clubs. Then the stupid bastard proceeded to pawn them at a cash converters literally 20 yards away where they match your picture from the security camera to the item.
Couple days later my father was walkin past the shop and saw them in the window, went in a told them that they were his,had been robbed a couple days before.
Guards came in,matched up the pic(they knew the fella straight away) and paid him a visit. He still denied it even when my fathers golf fleece that he kept in the bag was found in his apartment :D

Sold my xbox to Cash Convertors a few years back to get the 360, couple in front of me were pawning their kids PSP, completely out of it. The wife turns to the husband saying "you better get that back on Monday...lets get a breakfast roll"

She had her priorites sorted obviously.
