Patch panel - category specific??

    Hi,

    Just wondering is a patch panel specific to your cabling? By that I mean if you have cat 6 cabling does the patch panel have to be cat 6 or is a patch panel just a physical frame to mount points.

    My electrician has just installed a patch panel and I found a leaflet for it that says it is cat 5e but my house has cat 6 cabling.

    ok its like this. If you have a certified cat 6 network, patch panels modules etc and you use cat5e patch cables you have a cat5e performance network. Your network is only as strong as its weakest link. So yes you have a cat5e performing network now. thats why most electricians should not be allowed do structured cabling. Thats why I dont terminate swa..

    As Eoghan has stated you have a Cat 5e performing network so lag as the components used are interoperable and backward compliant. If so your network will give you 1gb to the desk which is all you require. Cat 6 is OTT unless you are using specialised applications.
