Okay, so I'm goin into the 2nd year of my course in next month and am, as the title of the thread suggests, looking to get a maintenance grant.

I know that you need to give your results from the previous year, but, I have a couple of exams to repeat in two weeks. So, should I wait til I get my repeat results to finish my application? And if not, will the fact I have failed modules effect the decision to give me a grant?

I'm really not that sure on your situation but I would hand in your forms now, since I've done similar when I haven't had all my info ready. The main thing is to get your forms in the system. If you fail exams a second time it just means you might not get into second year and then you won't get a grant if you need to repeat first year. As long as you go into second year you'll probably be able to get the grant, my advice is hand in the forms before the deadline even if you haven't all you need.

Any applications I've seen normally says something like, please include your original results and results of any repeat exams.

I'd say they will send back your application if they see you haven't passed 1st year yet.

Yes. but the deadline is Aug 31st so get the app form in before the deadline ends and tell them repeat results are to follow if that is what is outstanding and you haven't the results available by then. If you have to repeat 1st year, you won't get a grant to do it again and you will have to pay tuition fees and the registration fee.

They know that a lot of the repeat results are out in September.

I've handed in my forms before while I was waiting on a letter about my results from college, there was no problem at all and it was after the deadline before I sent in the letter. The deadline is only a guideline really, they will accept and process the forms after the date but it's best to just tell them now what your problem is just so that they have a record of your forms before the deadline.

Maybe it depends on the authority or something, but I know that if I sent in an application without repeat results, if I had repeats, that I would get that application fired back at me very quickly and be "politely" reminded that I need to have the official repeat results document included.

But that would be ridiculous, if the deadline is Aug 31 for handing in the form and the repeat results are not issued to you by that date - how can you give them what does not yet exist? Of course if you don't explain that they have not been issued and that you will forward them on as soon as you get them, then they can't guess on your behalf that this is going to happen. So I would send in the form, telling them that results are pending and they will quite reasonably accept this as long as you do send in the results at the first opportunity.

When I have done this in the past, I just waited till September, when I got my repeat results and then I sent in my application form. Its a "soft" deadline.

It's a deadline that MAY be extended at their discretion. I just don't think it makes sense to miss it. Why would you do that when you don't need to?

My VEC considered the application incomplete without the repeat results. They just didn't want it and they made it clear that I was to send the application in when I had the repeat results. They knew that that would be in September and I'd say they get thousands of applications in September.

The deadline is most likely to encourage new applicants to get their forms in on time.
