make use of the 21% vat reduction when buying like say a new land rover?, is it viable to start a business just so you can do this?, is it legal?

If you are just applying for a legal company to get the Vat off the Rover, then no its not a good idea .. and this is not the forum for such if you have no interest in business.

it was a pretty genuine question, i dont have to have interest in business to ask questions about one, its a public forum and the charter doesnt say "dont ask hypothetical questions" or dont ask questions if your not interested in doing business.

If you think that the Vat man is going to repay you all the VAT on your vehicle and never chase you for it when you dissappear, you're mad.

    OP

You have to be trading to register for vat. The impression you give is that you are just registering for VAT to get a reduction on the purchase price of the motor vehicle and that is the only transaction you have in mind. This is not trading.

In any case as a landrover is not a commercial vehicle (ie a van) you cannot claim back the VAT anyway even if you are a business.

    Kind Regards

    dbran,
you're wrong, you can get a VAT no before you start to trade.

Yes niceirishfella you are correct in that you can apply for a VAT number that you intend to trade and claim back such business expenses that you incur before you start to actually trade and sell things.

But what I mean is you cant use that VAT number to claim back things that arn't business expenses but are personal expenses.

And if you never intend to trade at all you cant claim back anything!

    Regards

You still have to pay the full price of the vehicle, It will then take six months before you can claim the V.A.T back.

The revenue are not stupid anyway and will be wise to what you are at so its not a good idea.
