    Hi folks,

No Drama Theatre group are hosting a full day Directing workshop tomorrow in Synge St CBS from 11am - 5pm. We are allowing non-members into this for a fee of 25 euros (unbelievable, I know!). PM me (Doozie) if you are interested :)
There are two places left but I need to know today before 2pm if anyone is available to partake?

    The outline is:

Workshop: Exploring Status and Power in directing a scene for theatre
    Time: 11:00am - 5:00 pm

    11:00 - 12:00
This will consist of a warm up session of about 20 minutes. The warm up will aim at focusing on the theme of the day namely Power and Status in a fun, energetic and cerebal way.
On completion of the warm up there will be a number of exercises involved with looking at power/status, blocking and the power scale as we look towards directing and developing a scene.

    12:00 - 1:00
All participants wil be given a chance to explore the different ways a scene may be approached and directed using blocking and the power scale. This will involve a great deal of participation from the people taking part and the audience watching. All ideas and suggestions will be explored. "Story-boarding" a scene may also be introduced (this would stretch the time to possibly 1:30)

    1:00 - 2:00 Break

2:00 - 5:00 In the afternoon budding directors will have the chance to direct a scene, between 5 - 10mins long, with the focus on power and status within that particular scene using the ideas and information from the morning session. Actors will have a chance to figure out their character's power/status and how it developes throughout a scene. These scenes will then be performed in front of the rest of the group where we will be looking for feedback on the blocking and "layout" of the scene.

Any members wishing to attend can contact Sheila at secretarynodrama@gmail.com or come to Sheila or Dave at the workshop this Tuesday. Money is taken in advance to secure your place. Max 20 people. We can allocate room for 8 directors and 13 - 15 actors.

I learned loads and thoroughly enjoyed it. Neil really knows his improv!” – Cathal (former student)

    Hi,

I am running the 'Introduction to acting for adults' workshop again

This workshop is for anybody who wants:

    * To learn more about acting
    * To improve their public speaking, presentation skills
    * To meet new people in a friendly and exciting environment
    * To build their confidence
    * To challenge themselves
    * To learn more about human behaviour and psychology
    * To try something new
    * To have some fun and lots of it

It's not just for actors, but also for those interested in any of the above.

Location - Portobello area, Dublin 8 in a nice heated space with parking facilities. 2 hours every Tuesday (7pm to 9pm) for 6 weeks,
    starting Tuesday 5th February 2013.

Cost - €120 for the 6 weeks, which is great value!!!
Early bird offering of €109 (up until Tuesday 21st January)
Discounted price of €105 for Boards.ie members.

The workshops are based around the teachings of Constantin Stanislavski and Stella Adler.

I am a professional actor and award winning filmmaker, and trained at the 'Stanislavski studio' at the Focus Theatre.

Here is some feedback from the first course:

"I found the course to be a really good introduction to the basics of acting, or even preparing for an event, presentation or situation in which you need to communicate a message to a body of people. I took the class mainly out of interest for the craft but I was also hoping it would help me with my presentation skills, confidence and general presence for public speaking. I have definitely picked up some valuable tools to draw on, as well as an insight into the foundations of acting (as opposed to drama). Mark’s approach was both logical and creative - giving us the background to the techniques as well as encouraging us to explore putting them into practice through improvised scenes and scenarios... It was really enjoyable, as well as being practical and applicable."
    - Jessica Ramsey, Dublin.

" Mark McAuley's Introduction to Acting for Adults workshop, is fun, energetic, imaginative and thought-provoking. For anyone who has an interest in unlocking their creativity, flexing their imagination, and understanding human nature and behaviour a LOT better, then this is the course for you. A great lesson in Acting, and an all-round confidence builder." - Cliona O'Connell, Dublin.

"I have to say I really enjoyed the course. I liked the fact that we didn’t jump into dialogue straight away and concentrated more on becoming aware of our own movements. It’s something I never really thought about before but I thought it was a good way to ease your way into it" - Michelle Deaton, Dublin.

During the course we will cover:

    - The role of the imagination
    - Relaxation
    - Actions not emotions
    - The importance of observation/ paying attention
    - Working on the moment to moment
    - Relationship with self, place and other characters
    - Working with other actors/communication
    - Justification (instant and inner)
    - Objectives - finding the need/desire/‘I want’
    - Improvisation

If anyone is interested or if they have any questions about the course please PM me.

    Introduction to Playback Theatre

To accompany their performance in IMPROSITEATION, The Playback Company is offering an Introduction to Playback workshop facilitated by Artistic Director Cathal McGuire.

Playback is a specialised form of improvised theatre developed in the U.S in the 1970's by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas and performed by ensembles around the world. Like many such ensembles, The Playback Company has developed its own take on the traditional approach, adapting old forms and inventing new ones to better suit their playful, vibrant energy while remaining true to playback theatre's core principles.

As well as providing an introduction to the basics of traditional playback, this workshop will give participants the opportunity to try out The Playback Company's own training methods and performance techniques. Drawn from a wide variety of theatre disciplines, these games and exercises have many applications beyond playback theatre: performers will experience new ways of developing awareness, presence and spontaneity; theatremakers will find new tools for devising and ensemble-building.

This day-long intensive workshop is designed for professional and student performers/theatremakers and will be delivered in siteation's downstairs performance space.

Applicants are asked to email their interest to imprositeation@gmail.com with "playback" in the subject line by Friday 24th May.

Cost: €30 (as this is in an unfunded space, we are unable to offer a discount. However, €30 is cracking value!)

Date and times: Friday 31st May from 10.30 to 4.30

Location: siteation, 12 Little Britain St, Dublin 7

    CREATING CHARACTERS through IMPROVISATION
One day master-class with John Dawson

In this intensive, craic-filled, one day class, a vast range of improvisation techniques are explored that enable participants to create believable, multi-dimensional characters very quickly, all in the spirit of true 'play'.

Drawing from Constantin Stanislavski, Rudolf Laban, Stella Adler, Keith Johnston, Viola Spolin and N. America’s famous Second City Theatre,
John will take participants through a series of exercises focusing on synchronizing inner/outer movement, using the imagination and developing one’s sense memory.
This is excellent training for improvisation performers and actors who are auditioning and performing in text-base material for the stage and screens, both big and small.

    JOHN DAWSON - Bio

Originally from Toronto, Canada, John Dawson has been teaching master-classes and workshops in improv, characterization, scene study, audition technique and on-camera acting for over 19 years in three countries. He studied the 'Harold' with its creator, improv guru Del Close, while training in improv at N. America’s famous Second City Theatre, the forerunner and principal casting pool for Saturday Night Live. John went on to become a founding member of a Toronto-based Harold troupe. He has taught hundreds of actors and comics including members of The Princes of Lagos, The Banker's Craic Pack, Cork's Snatch Comedy troupe, Limerick's Choke Comedy and many more in his own Dublin workshop. He conducts workshops and classes for institutions, corporations, and drama schools including Dublin’s Gaiety School of Acting, The Actors Centre in London, The Galway Film Centre, and Toronto’s Equity Showcase Theatre. He taught film acting for over 6 years at Trinity College’s Samuel Beckett Centre. John is a produced playwright, screenwriter and director.

We all tell stories, all the time. It's how we figure out the world, and it's how we bond with other people. You could even go as far as saying that stories are what makes us human.

Playback Theatre is a unique kind of improvised theatre based on your audiences' real-life stories. It's walking the high-wire of improvisation: everyone knows how it's going to end, but getting there is ALL of the fun.

Facilitated by The Playback Company's artistic director Cathal McGuire, this course of ten weekly workshops is designed to give performers a grounding in the foundations of Playback Theatre. Not only will you learn the secrets of the form itself, you will be developing a whole range of valuable skills:

    Spontaneity
    Empathy
    Active listening
    Presence
    Precision
    Physical articulation
    Ensemble dynamics
    Imagination
    Storytelling

The People's Theatre is hosting these workshops from 7.00 to 9.00 pm on Monday evenings. Cost is €150 for the full course of ten weekly workshops, but there's a special early bird price of €135 (that's one free workshop!) if you book by Tuesday 5th August.

Places are limited: contact us at firedoorplayback@gmail.com to book your place or for more information.

    CHARACTER-WORKSHOP.png

I know I have a heart because it's breaking ~ The Tin Man, Wizard of OZ.

Where do the really best laughs come from? Terrific connections made intellectually, or terrific revelations made emotionally - Del Close

The moment we walk out on stage, we are stepping into the shoes of a character and desire to see the world through the emotional lens that they do. As improvisers, we are challenged with creating authentic, grounded characters that are almost immediately recognisable when they are revisited again. However, many characters we see on stage often lack the depth to be sustainable over a longer period.

In this workshop Maura Mannle and Neil Curran will take you on a deep dive into discovering the core of character. We will learn how to create deeper connections to the character and in turn a deeper character. We will explore the heat and the weight of character, forming stronger emotional connections to both the character and scene partners.

Fully fleshed characters allow us to gain connections to partners in a scene more easily. With a deep character - more discoveries can happen in the world around them rather than inventing a situation or issue on stage. Let the depth of the character lead you through the scene.

Once you fully understood this character, we can play with putting them in different situations; from callbacks to having other actors play that character.

    Learning Outcomes
    * Understanding the core of character, the source of our personas on stage
*Utilise deep rooted characters to drive a scene forward
    * Find connections in the relationships with your scene partners
    * Knowing who you are and knowing what you want
    * Engage more authentic and deeper emotional connections
    * Gain confidence with taking greater risk in character development

    * * * * * * *

Workshop 2: Re-Improvising into Sketch with Maura Mannle
    Sunday 15th December - 10:30am to 2pm

The LAB, Foley Street Dublin 1
Cost: €70 (or special rate of €100 if taking both workshops)

Ever have those magic moments on stage or in class? Whether your character was down right brilliant, or the connection to your scene partner was electric?! That’s the magic of improv. Ever think about re-created that magic?!

In this workshop we will learn how to take those magic moments you improvised to recreate them for sketch writing and performing. One of these approaches is called Re-Improvisation.

    What is Re-Improvisation you ask?
Just what you think it is - redoing a scene you had just improvised but doing it with a more mindful lense that second time around. Keeping in mind; What is the premise of the scene? who are the characters? what is the joke of the scene? is there a game? most importantly, is this scene worth retelling? I believe every single improv scene has at least one element in it that is worth exploring more, whether that is a character, a premise, a game, the unique location, a sound, the possibilities are endless, use your imagination. Most characters you see on Saturday Night Live were developed by way of Re-Improvisation.

In this three and a half hour workshop, Maura will walk everyone through specialized warm up exercises with re-improvisation in mind. The core of the class will be improvised two person scenes, Maura and class will then discuss scenes, giving notes on what elements are worth bringing back, heightening, de-heightening for the re-improvised portion. After the re-improvised portions, students are encouraged to write certain scenes, elements of scenes down for future sketches. The final part of the class will be an open Q & A on sketch writing, performing sketches and the world of sketch!

The tool of re-improvisation is vital - gets you in the writer's mind, of how to see characters, how they can live in other worlds, other situations.

If you take the heart of the character workshop - Maura encourages you to bring at least one of the characters you created to class!

    Learning Outcomes
    * Bring characters from improv scenes and past characters to life in Sketch
    * Develop a writer's mind with great awareness and observation of other types of media such as TV and film
    * Relieving the pressure of creating a character from scratch when writing.
