Oh for goodness sake, am I never going to get a rest? It's in my home parish so I can't not do it.

I know, that's why I'm sticking to my guns on the break, because something always comes up. Part of me really wants to support it and of course its only up the road, but no it will have to wait until next year for me.

    Don't get too excited:
It will start in Ravensdale Forest, and immediately competitors will commence a 470 meter climb along forest tracks to the summit of Black Mountain. From there our competitors will traverse along the open mountain and descend to meet a quiet trail before moving onto The Windy Gap with a 150 meter climb, before descending into our finishing point in Carlingford Village.

    Total Distance: 21km

    From here

In thier defence it's officially called "The Carlingford Mountain Run Challenge 2009" but it's URL is www.debraireland.org/marathon and the piece in the paper is certainly misleading.

I reckon a marathon in November would do well especially for anyone that was training for Dublin and for some reason didn't make the start line. Or is there one then?
Whats with all the September marathons anyway?

A good piece of detective work there Amadeus, another example of the term Marathon being abused:mad:

I wish them well with the race, and acknowledge the good work the organisation does, but it still gets to me when I see misleading stuff like that. I wonder if it was the paper and a lack of knowledge or the organisation.

I only got that paper today as I done an interview with them around the Mobile Relay Marathon. A tad ironic as two pages down from that article is a quote from me defining ultra running.

Typical Dundalk Democrat reporting - since when did a 21K off road mountain run become a marathon??

The whole marathon / mini-marathon thing has been done to death on here. What is disappointing and different about this one is that it's not your typical mini-marathon event. It actually sounds like an excellent and challenging event that would draw a lot of interest from the IMRA crowd. So why not advertise it for what it is - a tough 21k mountain race?

Actually that said the big challenge for them is going to be teh entry fee. I know they are offering a bus to teh start and support stations on the route but don't most IMRA races cost between €5-10? €30 in + €70 requested in sponsorship is pretty steep for what is basically an off road half.

I nearly didn't read this thread as it mentioned "new marathon" and I don't want to do one this year. Odyseus - maybe you should change the title on the thread?

However being an IMRA enthusiast 21k is a lot more appealing and now I am interested. I would have done the Wicklow bnut for an injury.

The other thing I am not sure about is the entry fee. The DEBRA website states "Registration cost: €30, and we will be asking all participants to fundraise minimum €70 for DEBRA Ireland." Does this mean that I have to pay a minimum of € 100 to enter this race?

I have already raised money for another charity in the last year and cannot go back to the well again.

I have mailed DEBRA so I will let you know their response.

    Renamed

Just seen your other point Geld. Yep, my understanding is that it's basically a €100 entry but with €70 officially classed as a fundraiser. Same idea as teh charity walks / treks I guess.

I got the following reply from Debra.

Thank you for your enquiry and apologies about the delay in a reply. This mountain run is a charity fundraiser, this is why we are asking participant to fundraise the €70. I totally understand your position about being unable to ask people again for sponsorship especially the year that’s in it.

This is the second mountain run we have organised this year, and both these events were a first for DEBRA Ireland. We were unsure about the kind of numbers we would get for an event such as this as it is a mountain run and not your usual road half marathon that many charities including ourselves are involved in. When we set the registration fee and fundraising for this year we had to ensure that costs would be fully covered as DEBRA Ireland being a charity can not afford to suffer any kind of loss. This is where the registration fee came in to cover any cost incurred, and the fundraising separate to ensure that some money is made for the charity this year.

Please feel free to contact me with any other questions you may have.

    Thanks and Kind Regards,

They are using the €30 to cover their costs; buses insurance etc and the remaining €70 to raise funds.

I am now thinking of doing this as at least I have the comfort of knowing that the funds ARE going to a worthy cause not like some others.
