Dodgy. Even if he finds a job, manufacturing jobs are usually the first to go in a downsizing.

He should stay in Kilkenny and try to get some sort of education.

Manufacturing work in Ireland will soon be extinct.

I managed to get a job after 18 months unemployed and am in a support role in an office in the city centre. My experience in mnfg is that all the routine jobs are being shipped out and only support and development work is being done in Ireland.
Versatility, teamwork and communications are the key drivers in the future.
Anyone looking for work in the future will need to have a well rounded set of skills and probably never stop acquiring new ones and keeping old ones up to date.
Before starting in this job I had offers of work at around 22K pa on temporary software load and test jobs in thye D15 area last Christmas but even that is gone now as far as I know.
