Hi travelled to the states before but was always with my parents.
This time it will just be myself and OH.

Booking flights is easy enough and make sure the passport is within 6 months

Insurance wise will I need health or travel insurance and what options are there. I know I've plan A VHI and VHI travel insurance but the OH wouldn't have any is this necessaruy?

VISA's etc whats the story with these?

Heard of the guys that got refused entry into Ireland for non return flights and no address. I will have a hotel booked for the first few nights and flights will be return so shouldn't be a prob.

    Anything else I should know?

All the visa information you need is here

    http://dublin.usembassy.gov/general/welcome.html

Basically your passport must be valid for 6 months after your return date from US.

In advance of travel necessary to complete an online application ESTA - straightforward and virtually instant confirmation.

    http://dublin.usembassy.gov/general/esta.html

Then when you travel complete the visa waiver form which you pick up at check in.

Travel insurance - definitely need this, medical bills in US would be huge!

As for accomodation, so long as you have initial hotels booked and a return flight you will not have an issue.

There is a link to ESTA on Aer Lingus website and also via the link above.

Read the ESTA thread and apply for ESTA for each member of the group travelling.

Irish residents apply for the visa-waiver program so no problem there.

Travel insurance is all up to you I'm afraid. Some take it others don't bother. You can get insurance for the flight/baggage/health/cancellations... The sticky at the top of the forum has some suggestions as to companies offering insurance.

The information on this page would seem to indicate that I need an e-passport is this correct. If so are these standard on irish passports? Mine is up for renewal anyway so not a big problem but just wondering

The page you link to only refers to Emergency or VWP Temporary Passports. Almost all Irish passports issued since 1988 are machine-readable and therefore valid.
