I have a Sony Home Cinema System (5.1) and i love the speakers & woofer and the way i have everything set up. But you see i want to upgrage to a Blu-Ray player.

Would i be able to buy a stand alone blu-ray player without any speakers and just connect it to the speakers and sub woofer all ready set up in my home

What's the model number of your Sony set up ?

Sounds like the OP is using a basic sony DVD/speaker combo.
Most affordable standalone Blu Ray players will not allow you to hook up speakers to them.
You would need to buy a receiver seperately and connect up the Blu Ray player by analogue RCA cables or over HDMI (expensive for HD audio).

If it is a basic dvd/speakers combo, then he/she could expect to be able to connect a blu ray player to it for audio by RCA and get Pro Logic sound and connect the bluray to tv by HDMI for video. The difference in sound between DD 5.1 and Pro Logic on these systems isn't a huge gap so there shouldn't be a huge disappointment - of course, a recever and upgraded speakers would result in a superior sound, but this could be added at a later stage if desired.

Yes you could do that, if the Blu Ray player sends optical out 5.1 with HDMI also.

As long as there is an optical input on the sony system you will be able to get dolby digital. I have done that with a similar system recently.
