Same iTunes problem again & again!!!

I have a 30gb ipod that is 2.5 years old. Since then on 4 occassions I've opened iTunes only to find that when I try to play a song listed in the library an exclamation mark appears beside it & I'm notified that it can't find where the file where the song is stored; the library listings are no longer linked to the songs & so can't play them.

On previous occassions I've just started over, reloading iTunes, all the music, new playlists, etc, but with nearly 30,000 songs I just can't face starting over again. It took days & weeks to create those playlists.

I googled the problem & it seems that this is a common enough problem. There are so many solutions offered though that I'd really prefer to know if someone else out there has had the same problem & found a solution that actually works.

I store all my songs on an external hard drive & I am wondering whether this could be a part of the problem.

    Thanks for any help.
