Hey Hannah, we rehomed Cloud and Rikku last August from Kelly and are also on the look out for some additions to the family so let me know if and when you need to rehome any ferrets.

I take it that you are a Final Fantasy fan... specifically 7 and 10... if so I approve much^^ If not, then what are the chances lol

Anyway, I live in Limerick and am very interested in getting a ferret for a pet also (if I ever am to get a pet). I just worry about whether or not the vets here could help me with it (ie. vaccinations and stuff).

I feel like it's good to have this sort of responsibility, and I'll probably get a good friend out of it... I mainly look for a male one, redish colour if possible.

Even in Limerick the vets are trained to deal with all kinds of animals and any Small Animal practise will be able to help you.
Lovely animals (ferrets not vets!)and not as appreciated as they should be.

The best way to know if a local vet is suitable is to go and talk to them... Ask if they have much experience with ferrets and if so what experience is it? Have they just done vaccinations and microchipping? Or neuturing and spaying aswell... or even if they've dealt with more serious stuff such as ECE or adrenal disease. Chances are most vets haven't dealt with much serious ferret stuff but that doesn't have to be a problem if you are willing to travel a bit to see an exotics specialist if your ferrets ever become seriously ill.

I have ferrets and my local vet does have ferret experience. She's quite happy to do check ups, vaccines, x-rays, neuturing and blood tests but at the same time when something comes up that she hasn't come across before she's very happy to recommend a trip to the specialist or discuss the sypmtoms over the phone with the specialist.

I can recommend Bairbre O'Malley in Bray for anything that's not run of the mill... I know she's no where near you but for she is great for giving advice over the phone. At the moment one of my ferrets has suspected Adrenal Disease which my local vet doesn't know much about so Bairbre has told us what blood tests etc she wants run and we're doing all the testing up here in Drogheda and sending the results down to her to save me the trip to Bray.

I'm sure you'll find a ferret friendly vet closer to you, I'd suggest giving Kelly at Cottage Rescue in Co Tipp a call and asking them if they could recommend a ferret vet for you. Best of luck.
