Hi all, thinking of going to the Flat Lake Literary Festival in Monaghan at the weekend. It's supposed to be a bit of craic and a little weird. Just wondering has anyone else been and, if so, was it good? Cheers:D

Yeah, I've heard good things about it as well but all in the form of reports from someone who know someone who knows someone who went! Yep, heard that Lily Allen's uncle owns the estate and she was there last year (as a visitor). So, I suppose I'll head along. It looks interesting! Thanks.

It's a brilliantly different weekend, no bull**** and no big money floating around to spoil things, just authors and their work, film, theatre, a great fun campfire and the likelihood of madness and fun breaking out. Small scale in a good way and a shoestring budget....come prepared and you will have a ball. Lily Allen's uncle doesnt own the estate, he is married to a daughter of the owner. Keith Allen is mucking in getting the place ready all week too. all you need to know is on the website www.theflatlakefestival.com or pm me if you need to know anything specific, I may be able to help.

Just came on here to check this out but it was last weekend :( looked like a good set up.

Anyone who was there willing to give us some feedback? One to put in the calendar for next year?

Any other literary festivals coming up in Ireland?

It's great craic, as a previous poster said, no big budget bullsh1t, just an eclectic mix of poetry, literature, music and as Seamy said, film. Course this year there is the interesting collaborartion of Lily Allen and Crystal Swing :D. Should be good fun, fingers crossed the good weather holds.

I live right beside it, but probably won't be going. A shame of course, but I have literally no cash. Might try to head down for at least one night.

I was there on the sunday last year and going for the whole weekend this time :D Cant wait its mighty banter....massively different and artsy fartsy but a unique experience definately :D

I was there on Friday night. Twas good craic. Basically it was 'get drunk in a field and stumble around looking for a burger'. Not bad for 25 euros...

I think that's a bit unfair Denerick, it's the kind of festival that you can see and do as much or as little as you like. I'm not mad into the artsy fartsy stuff, but I was there on Sat evening and without too much effort saw Anne Enright doing a reading, a film in the Clones Film Festival tent, Alexi Sayle doing a reading/stand up and Crystal Swing trying to keep Lily Allen standing up! We still had plenty of time to chill out, have a beer and listen to some of the music that seemed to spontaneously break out. I think it's a bit more than
'get drunk in a field and stumble around looking for a burger'
Would highly recommend it for everyone next year!

I was actually praising its virtues, in a somewhat ironic snarky light. Will go next year for the full weekend if I'm about.

Me too, Sunday night was supposed to be even better than the Saturday night. Don't know if i'd be able to stick the pace for the whole weekend though, will have to do some serious drinking practise before I attempt it :D.
