Passed by a second hand dealers today and noticed that the numberplates had been removed from the cars and replaced with a plate containing the name of the dealer. Why would he do that?

    1. So you dont know what year it is and come in for a look.

    2. So you are not a bunch of scangers driving around writing down the numbers, makes and models to make plates for the cars you are going to steal and then use the number plates so the Garda ANPR cameras cannot sniff you out.

    Possibly more reasons.

seems like the most logical reason tbh.

Because they are imported n.Ireland or Uk cars and do not have an Irish registration yet.

    That's it.

Because it's sat on the forecourt for over a year and by changing to
a generic plate they're hoping you'll think whilst the same model it's a different car.

i asked a dealer why he did this and he told me that any car without a reg
was an import and he said english and northern regs put some people off..
for me personally i'd prefer to see english reg cos that means higher spec...

Got it in one! Knowing the UK registration number would make it easy to run a HPI check and find out if it's been clocked or in a crash. What have they got to hide?

While I'm sure the UK reg thing is one of the reasons, it can't be the only one.

Heaps of dealers put their branding plates on cars these days, that ain't all swimmers.

Wouldn't be in Deansgrange by any chance? Drove by Grange last nite and all front number plates of pre-owned car were obscured.

Many dealers do this for some if not all of the reasons above. If I was a dealer I would do it too! The 87+ reg's brought out a lot of snobbery too. Imagine you saw a nice tasty 5 or 7 series (replace with whatever car you like) and then discovered to your horror that it was 'only' a '99!
