    Hi All,
I am going on holidays next week and a friend has sorted a hire bike for me while I am in France. I was planning to bring my own shoes and helmet. I was wondering if I should bring the helmet as carry on or would it be safe in my backpack in the hold with the other luggage. I am just a bit concerned that it may get thrown about a bit or damaged in the backpack. What do you guys usally do? Thanks in advance.

I always carry my bike helmet aboard the plane - too great a risk of having it squashed in baggage. You might be asked to take it off your head during the security check though.

I usually carry it aboard, although if I am bringing a hard shell bike box it sometimes goes in there if it will fit. I'd say carry it on.

I have one of these Giro Helmet Pods which cost €20 but really protect your expensive helemts (any brand or size will fit) from knocks and drops - although it's not so strong as to prevent squashing from extreme pressure from heavy loads in the cargo hold, so I usually just strap it onto my carry on luggage somewhere.

Carry on. Just clip it to your bag.

I fly about four times a year to Spain. My helmet has always gone in a rucksack, in the baggage hold. Never been a problem.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Tempted as I am to wear it through the airport I'll give it a miss. I think I will clip it to my hand luggage backpack to be safe. Thanks again.
