Well, you can just format the HD and reinstall the OS. That'll "reset" the PC alright.

I just felt that as I have nothing to save it would be quicker to restore to factory settings, as this would include the OS.

Well, perhaps, but what are you trying to rectify? What's wrong with the machine?

Well, you could roll-back to a previous "version" of your PC using System Restore. If you haven't cleared out all the restore points that were saved, you can just restore your PC to the very first Restore Point, which will be created just after you turn it on the very first time.

If you've cleared out your restore points (IIRC Windows "clean up" deletes old restore points) then you're pretty much left with a rebuild as your only option. It's a lot easier than people think. Just boot from the OS CD and it will give you the option to Erase and Install.

It's a job for a saturday morning. Shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours and it's not something you have to sit watching - you can go off and come back to it as it's chugging away.
