    and Dino Crisis also.

Capcom said a couple of months back that they were going to release some of their classics on PSN.

    Guess they werent telling lies.

But why are they so slow to release PS1 games?? why aint we playing GTA1&2 or Gran Turismo, spiderman, Smackdown1, Tony Hawks etc etc etc etc??

    Get the finger out sony:rolleyes:

Resident Evil 2 and 3 are the best in the series, especially 2. Dino Crisis was just as good, although Dino Crisis 2 would also be a welcome addition!

Its all some bull about "getting the licenses from the games original publishers" or such nonsense. I have a USA PSN account (doesnt all PS3 owners) and seeing the PSOne game on it is heartbreaking: MGS, Resi 1 DC, FF7, Wild Arms 1+2, Suikoden....and what do we have........2 FISHING games....grrr.

I honestly thought that the advent of the current gen, online downloads and the increase in the European market as vital to games companies but seems Sony wants to hark back to the "red-headed stepchild" era

Licensing issues shouldn't be a problem at all though, just look at how many titles are on the Vitual Console and the japanese PSN. The virtual console in particular would have a lot more licensing problems. It's just an excuse for lazy sony of europe. And if people think the range of titles on the US PSN is good then they should check out the Japanese store, it's even better. At least we can buy the superior US and Jap versions of the games over the awful PAL versions they put up on the EU store. I feel sorry for the people who bought the EU PSN version of FFVII.

Do you actually have the US Digital version of FF7 or are you just assuming based on the old discs that it is faster? Can't find anything on the net about loading times.

What retro said about PAL 50HZ FFVII is true. The EU version is a bit sluggish compared to the NTSC release.

Anyway, have Capcom confirmed an EU release for Resi 2+3 yet? (edit:nope :( ) RE1 hasn't made the jump yet.

Square need to get a move on with Xenogears as well

Same question for you then? Have you played the US and EU digital versions?
Have you a link to someone else saying it? I just want to know for sure.

I've played EU (My disc version however. Its the same version that was uploaded to PSN, as confirmed by people in this thread)

And I have played a US digital copy. There isnt really any discrepancy with loading times, but animations are notably faster in the US version, particularly when controlling Cloud's field model.

The PAL version has black borders on the top and bottom of the screen.
If you've played Onimusha or Devil May Cry on PS2, then that is a good example of great games being significantly less great in 50HZ.

If you ever tried the 60HZ option in Onimusha 2, then you'd get an idea of the speed difference we Europeans often get

So u haven't played both digital copies? My whole querey is relting to whether or not the loading time matter in a digital copy or whether we got a Euro version on EU PSN at all. But if you are that sure. You don't need to give me a general lecture.

It's nothing to do with loading times. The loading times are exactly the same on both versions. It's to do with the gameplay being 16.7% slower than the NTSC version. It might not sound like much but if you have played both the PAL version seems quite sluggish in movement and animation. I think the worst factor is that the sound is slowed down by the same amount making a lot of music in the game seem far less exciting or much slower paced than it really is. Black borders are also annoying. A good indicator is to look at the clock in the menu in FFVII and see how it runs slower than it sould.

Here's a very good example and FFVII is a similarly poor conversion:

The US and European versions are definitely the unaltered iso's of the NTSC and PAL versions respectively and the PAL version suffers from the same issues.

I know all about bad PAL conversions, they have really annoyed me since the 32-bit era when there was no excuse for poor conversions. It only really changed when Capcom received a torrent of hate mail after their awful Devil May Cry conversion after people were used to excellent conversions on the DC. Unfortunately it took until nearly the end of the PS2 era for some companies like square to do decent conversions. Next time I play FFX it will be the NTSC version since all the characters look like fat bastards on a widescreen TV and the added black borders.

    Jeeeeeeeeesus

Retro that Sonic video just blew my mind, I knew there was a slight difference but I never thought it was that much!

Its like its playing it in slight slow motion.

I'll try to get the NTSC version so, that the EU Digital version is the ISO from the EU disc is what I really wanted to know.

I assume you will be playing NTSC FFX using the HD exploit?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,395 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well I'll be playing it using the HD exploit to save my laser mostly :) The loading times in FF games aren't that bad since they are disguised by the battle start up animations so the exploit doesn't make much of a difference. It only makes a big change in something like Odin Sphere which has atrocious loading times or streaming games like GTA since there are less streaming glitches. I also thought the dark aeons ruined the end game in the european version. I'd like to be able to do sidequests without having to over level to get past a dark aeon boss blocking the way.

I doubt it will be happening soon though since I'm going through a big Shin Megami Tensei addiction.
