Gearing is usually easier than on traditional road bikes and selected according to personal preference. Most racers opt for outer chainrings of 44- to 50-teeth and 38- or 39-tooth inners. And, rear cassettes are typically 12-27s or 13-27s. Tires have tread patterns that hook up in the dirt and mud, while offering low rolling resistance on pavement. Use dual-sided mountain-bike clipless pedals for cross racing. They're easy to enter and exit, shed mud well, and work with off-road shoes which are best for running.

P.S. I can send you on an interesting race report my mate Phil wrote. He is a big cyclocrosser.

When does the cross season start? Got a calendar?

Wondering whether this gives me a reason to get a 2009 CI racing license.

I am planning on giving this a go myself this winter, can members of other clubs join in the Swords league?

I'll have to defer to longer serving and better knowledgeable members than me on that one. You could post here maybe?

Edit: looks like it will take other club members as two have signed up

I've been charged with maintaining the Irish Cyclocross calendar on behalf of the CI Offroad Commission. We're still finalizing the dates for events south of the border, the NI dates are all in place.

    See the calendar here:

    note new link above

I'm hoping to have definite dates within the next couple of weeks.

I've never actually taken part in a cross race before, although MAD ran one last year in Tymon Park. I feel obliged to have a go now so I'm eyeing up suitable bikes...

Thanks Raam, I sent Dave an email. Reckon with this one a gentle introduction is the way to go before I attack an open race!

There's some talk of starting Cyclocross training sessions soon on mtbireland.com. These would be highly recommended for anyone giving cross a go this year:

Would I be right in saying this is substantially less technical than mountain biking? Or is it just a different sort of technical?

Yes, you wouldn't consider it technical in the mtb sense of the word. Certainly challenging though.

Challenging in the way road racing is challenging, or technically challenging?

    Haha, I don't doubt it.

Incidentally, what is the story with disc brakes on CX bikes- are they allowed below a certain level?

You can't lap me if I pull out after one lap!

I mean in the "your lungs might fall out" way.

Disc brakes are only banned in UCI sanctioned races (e.g. National Championship). They're really not necessary though - you'll be wanting to speed up, not slow down.
