Classic Cars

Question - how old does a car have to be to avail of classic car tax and insurance?

Also, do insurance companies generally have a limit on the number of miles you can do a year under a classic car policy?

30 years for classic tax/VRT, the figure varies for insurance but it's generally 20yrs. Mileage allowances vary by company. I'm moving this to classic cars.

Apols for wrong category - didnt notice the classic section.

So if it was 20 yrs for insurance, would early 90s jap imports be eligible in a few years? Or would insurance companies maintain their gripes about them?

Sorry for the proper classic enthusiats on here....I know jap turbos dont warrant the admiration of your cars :o

You may find that the 87 part of your username is your biggest obstacle to Insurance. Normally its 25+

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

General rules of a classic policy are

    Driver with 3+ years NCB
    Driver has Full License
    Driver is over 25
Car is being insured as a second car, I checked a number of companies and they wouldn't accept that I had a company car and were insisting that I have a policy in my own name before I can get a classic policy.
Car is 20 years old or a rare marque

With regards to VRT/Cheap tax it's 30 years old

    Harsh!

I was told a few years back it's okay if you're insured on your spouse's vehicle.

Somehow i doubt that the insurance companies would insure a 22 year old on a jap import under a classic car policy :D don't mean to stereotype, but a "boy racer" is hardly a classic car enthusiast and the insurance companies know this... :D
