Help: Renewal of passport with Spanish marriage cert?

    Hi Folks,

I've got exactly 11days before i go to Spain and i need a new passport with my married name on it (I've booked the flights in that name and i want my married name on the passport anyway).

    Does anyone know the following:

    - This is a passport renewal so do i need a garda stamp on the form?
    - Will they accept a spanish civil marriage certificate as proof of marriage?
    - If i go into the passport office tomorrow (exactly 10 days) would i be guaranteed they will have it ready or should i just bite the bullet and pay 55euro for an 'urgent' one?

    Help! Running out of time!

    Thanks,
    Figroll

I imagine that the cert will be fine but you will still need to get it translated into either English or Irish by a reputable translation agency.

I don't have a list of such agencies so maybe someone else can help with this (best contact the Passport office directly perhaps?)

If I was you I'd pay the €55 for the piece of mind it will bring knowing that you have your passport :)

Thanks Ponster - do you mean i'd need to get it translated before i get the passport renewed though?

Stupid me for leaving it all to the last minute of course!

    Yes, I'd imagine so.

I had to have my French marriage cert translated to English to have my passport renewed.
My dad found a company to do it (in Dublin) but I don't have any details as to who it was.

I think you should give the office a call and ask them if they have a list of recommended translators and then contact each one to find out who can get it translated as quickly as possible.

I shouldn't think you'll have any trouble finding someone to get it done in time.

    Passport Office Dublin
    Tel. +353 1 671 1633 or LoCall 1890 426 888

    Passport Office Cork
    Tel. +353 21 494 4700 or LoCall 1890 426 900

Call the passport office to find out what you need done exactly - doubt they'll have a list in the passport office of translation companies as it's not up to them to get the translations done it's up to the individuals.

Call the Spanish embassy ask them if they have a list or possibly someone there who does translations on the side (I'm sure they would be used to having documents translated into english) Make sure the translation has a stamp on it from the company translating and that they record it in case the application is looked at in detail otherwise it will be returned without something to verify the translation.

probably best to be safe and get the emergency one done.

Their website does though make reference to "official" and "recommended translators" but I imagine that it may be faster if the OP finds their own.

Good idea about the Spanish embassy!

Ok just been onto the passport office and they said it would be 'better' if i got the marriage cert translated but if i get all the paperwork together to say the passport is urgent and the cert is, in any way readable then it 'should be ok' but the woman couldn't tell me for sure. I do have to get it stamped by the guards though one way or the other so i'll do that tonight as well.

So i'll let you all know what the outcome is when i actually queue for the passport because by the sounds of it i won't know for sure until i'm actually in front of them. Oh and yeah i guess i'll just pay the extra for the urgent passport too.

    :o

    Cheers,
    Figroll
