    Hi,
I`m hoping somebody in these parts can help me, I`m all out of ideas.
My macbook won`t start, just apple symbol and twirling wheel. When I ran it in single user mode i got the following message.
`Runtime corruption detected on HD, FSCK will be forced on next mount.`
The problem is in order to repair this i need to boot from the OSX cd. This won`t boot, just whirrs and gets spit out after a while. I wouldn`t mind even doing a full clean reinstall at this stage. Any suggestions on how to get the cd to boot, or indeed fix the above problem.
Thanks in advance for your help.

To boot from CD/DVD you need to press and hold the 'c' key at the boot chimes.
fsck stands for filesystem check. You can check the man pages after you boot the installation CD or just simply google it.
If you manage to boot the installation media, start disk utility from the menu and repair the HDD (NOT the permissions).

Do you get to a prompt eventually when you boot into single user mode?

    Thanks for the reply.
That`s the strange thing, it won`t boot when I hold down `c`.
When I go into single user mode two promts come up. I`m not at my macbook at the moment but from memory they are
    /sbin / fsck /-fy
    /sbin /mount/ -uw

Type in either of these and something about `invalid sibling link` comes up. Wouldn`t mind but it`s a brand new hard drive. Can`t understand why the OS won`t boot.

hold down alt/opt while booting --- this should give you an alternative boot menu where you'll be able to select the DVD

plus have a quick look at the cd to make sure its clean - sometimes the odd smubge will stop it from booting

    Think I got it, this...

Reboot into Single User mode (restart, and press and hold Command-S). You will see a black screen with a command prompt.
Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2 and press Enter. This will repair the error, and will take a while (~10 minutes). Wait for the operation to complete i.e. until the command prompt appears again.
Type fsck -fy and press Enter. This will check the filesystem again, and confirm that it is now OK. Again, wait for the operation to complete i.e. until the command prompt appears again.
Type reboot and press Enter. This will restart the system to normal.

... seems to have done the trick.
