it seem that there is a debate that the jkd systems taught dan inosanto are bening discribed as concepts rather than jkd its self. and that jan fan gung fu and jan fan kickboxing are the original systems and that they should be call jkd and nothing else. what your throughts?

jeet kune do was always a concept never a style.

when something is a style it has to have boundaries to be defined as such, when it is just a concept then it is limitless.

This is a difficult question and I don't pretend to have the only answer, but here goes;

Bruce Lee studied diverse subjects such as nutritional science, strength training, flexibility training, physics, anatomy physiology, and psychology. His personal library contained over 2,000 books on martial arts and training,science,philosophy.He applied scientific principles to his martial art and these are transferable to all humans. The reality is that by following his training methods a person can make improvements to his or her martial art.
Jeet Kune Do has its own principles, philosophy, core training methods, and techniques that make it a separate martial art. Jeet Kune Do is not an eclectic martial art it is unique. Bruce Lee created a new martial art with techniques, footwork, stance and combat methodology.
Some elements of the noble art of Wing Chun are retained within the system however; Jeet Kune Do contains elements of Western Boxing,European fencing, Northern Chinese kicking,grappling. Jeet Kune Do martial art is not a process of constant change. There has been little change in the basis of Lee's art; the core principles, techniques and philosophies remain the same since the foundation of Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do.
Jeet Kune Do is about discovering the truth within ourselves and is a process of refinement. "A sculptor carving a statue to become a real human being."
"In JKD we begin not by accumulation but by discovering the cause of our own ignorance - a discovery that involves a shedding process." Lee (1971).
The core technical basis of the martial art remains the same: 5 ways of attack, 3 ranges, the bi jong, power side forward, lead straight punch, finger jab, energy / sensitivity, basic kicks,stophit,interception,entering and so on.

What tends to separate Jeet Kune Do from other martial arts is its emphasis on intercepting the opponent on intention, preparation or initiation of his attack. It has a philosophy and a non-classical approach towards individual freedom. Bruce Lee was not a "god" he was a very creative man who accepted "no limitation as limitation" because when there is a "way" therein lies the limitation. I think that Bruce would have been excited about BJJ and the MMA revolution as it promotes "reality in combat". Indeed many in JKD have explored these arts for themselves and give them due respect.

I think that Guro Dan teaches what he calls; "Jun Fan Martial Arts" seperately from other arts at his Academy in LA. This emcompasses the art and training methods taught to him by Bruce Lee.
