Intra in the recession

I've got a 6 month Intra placement coming up this year. What are my chances of finding a place? Is it very difficult in these recession times? I read a post by someone else who said that they were moving straight into 4th year and Intra was scrapped for their year because there was just no places.

Jaysus i hope that's not the case. I don't have to worry about it till the following year but some of my friends are going in to 3rd now and banking on a few working months for the cash.

Aye, it took me a while to get an INTRA placement but I got it eventually. Took me 4 interviews to get one.

I was lucky. There are HUGE amount of students that didn't get placements this year, and my co-ordinator described it as the worst year for INTRA.

    Good luck with it.

I'd of loved to be bumped up a year rather than doing intra. I really didnt want to do it in the first place and didnt in the end. Science students were given a 6-8 week project by various lecturers (for those who didnt secure a place). Projects varied from lab work to literature surveys. Think there was maybe 5 out of 30 something who didnt secure a placement. This was a year ago mind you. I dont know what the situation is like now. Probably a lot worse.

If you want an intra place start searching now .

INTRA was pretty bad in engineering this year. Intel took on 5/6 students I
think and then dropped them a week before they were due to start.

These guys, along with several others, have just being doing projects.

Although arguably sometimes you learn a lot more from one of the
projects if you are willing to put the work into it.

Yeah a bunch in business got a leg up to 4th year instead of intra due to the lack of positions

Uggggh... Have gone for 7 interviews, my marks were pretty good but having to tell interviewers that i missed semester 2 exams because of illness has not a job got me and the interview process is exhausting, have found the process was pretty badly organised this year as we were told in intra introductions earlier in the year that we wouldnt have problems regardless of the recession.... this was indeed NOT TRUE. The positions come verrrry rarely, extremely frustrating.... hortbreaking really. I would suggest that if you have no problems going into 4th year save yourself the agony and avoid. Saying that though, some have been lucky and secured pretty good jobs.

    Going into 4th year:confused:

The situation was very bad this year and its unlikely to improve next year. I'm in business studies and our INTRA is an optional year long placement and there is 192 in my course. About 50 went straight into the 4th year. Of the rest, only 76 jobs were put up on the INTRA website, several of which were withdrawn without placing anyone. I went on 4 interviews before I got a job, and then it was unpaid and only for 6 months. A lot that wanted INTRA are forced to go into 4th year. It all really depends on the course your on. My friends in engineering had a worse time and humanities were not that better off.

Yea there was serious lack of placements for intra compared to the number of people looking for them. Im in European business and just finished my placement last week. I started placement at the end of april and i only got the job 3 weeks beforehand!! i started looking for a job in november and it was really slow process and so many companies werent taking as many people as they usually would

I would advise you to start looking now for a placement and send your CV and letter to as many places as you can. THe intra office were really helpful but lots of people found great placements on their own by approaching the companies themselves! Intra was a great experience would reccomend it even if its really difficult to find somewhere it'll give you something to talk about when interviewing for graduate jobs which are much more difficult to secure!

Whats the latest regarding intra? Are people getting places?

Heard a bunch of marketing students have nothing yet and they're supposed to start in semester one!

Managed to get a placement, barely. Supposed to be a year long paid placement, instead I had to take a 6 months unpaid. given the times, you really can't be picky. most of my year didn't get anything

well I'm really not looking forward to third year and trying to face this.
Hopefully it gets a bit better

What course are you doing doylema3?

Having to take unpaid work when we were always told it was paid will be tough on alot of people, having to pay for accomodation and that on no income is very unfair.

Unpaid Intra? Is this happening? Shocking if it is. I'm almost 100% sure I won't get a place this year (bad bad results) + awful CV. Hope I don't get forced to take an unpaid placement.

I'm sure if you know someone that will take you on for the Intra placement DCU wont mind.

I'm currently on Intra myself in Boston. I was one of the lucky ones to get a job in my year. Very few jobs this year. I think it will pick up slightly this year, but it will probably be the year after until it is back to normal.

I'm in Business Studies. A class of 194. About 100 put down to do INTRA, only about half got it. I got my placement direct from the company, though the INTRA office did approve it. the job do contribute a small amount towards expenses but overall its unpaid. I just wanted a placement to beef up the CV. living in dublin helps bring down the costs and i'm going to half kill myself working at my part time job too.

If your lucky enough to half a course with an optional intra, think very very hard about doing it. there were people in my course still looking up to last week. If you have to do INTRA, start looking as so as possible. use every contact you have
