I need a new car but don't even like cars so when I look around they all look vaguely the same to me and the ones that stand out design wise are the newer ones! Mazda3, etc.
I don't want to spend more than 4k for my next car and want to stay small/medium sized car but as new as possible and as sexy a design as possible!
Has anyone any suggestions for this awful budget!!

Nice one, Colm - Close thread? :D

Actually I was going to suggest a 156, but that's really nice.

Appreciate the link and I can't believe that's a 1997 car but it's just a tad OTT for me I'm afraid.. Also as I'm a girl I'd like something bit less showoffy - that car is just too cool!
Any other ideas for a newer car model?
    Thanks a million.

You need to give us more details.
Number of doors, engine size, petrol or diesel ect.

Sounds silly but whats the FTO like to drive/own? I know you have one Colm, I've been looking at Integra's and plan on owning one in the next few weeks, but is the FTO up to the same standard of performance? Whenever I see V6 I always think repair costs and servicing costs, probably a stupid attitude!

If its only looks you're looking for then a Hyundaai Coupe would probably suit?

    I LOVE your car...the tax...oh the tax!!!

diesel or petrol, if it is easy on fuel then brilliant. Em, size wise new honda civic kinda size would be great, anything from that up to a bit wider, just not a long car..small-medium.

I've ran 2 of them, and they've never missed a beat. I love fixing stuff, but they've both been annoyingly reliable. The V6 has a split personality, at low revs you can drive it like a diesel, it'll pull out of roundabouts in 5th from 20mph no problem, on the other hand you can scream the engine over 8500rom and it just begs for more hard driving!

On FTO vs Integra, the FTO is just in a different league looks wise (no offense to the Honda fans) but the Integra has so much more aftermarket upgrades available. If you're looking at an FTO with a view to getting power gains, then maybe look at something else.

I wouldn't say the fact that it's a V6 has any bearing on repairs etc, the only bother being changing spark plugs, as it's a transverse mounted V6, the plenum and lots of ancilleries have to come off to change them. that said, the iridium plugs I use will do for years.

Re performance, it'd be fairly even with a DC2 type R, power delivery is smoother and engine is much nicer sounding. Teg is bigger inside. depends on what you're after.

Practicallity wise, it has quite a big boot and interior space would be comparable to a Colt, albeit with slightly less headroom. very easy to park, they're not a huge car.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Lexus/IS200/SPORT/200917192556132/advert?channel=CARS

can easily pick one up for 4k.

Very helpful Colm cheers, might take one out for a spin before I go for a teg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

No problem, mines a manual GPX, no problem if you wanna give it a go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭pog it

Wow. The lexus for 4k, deadly!
Going from 1.0 to 1.9 would a be mad change. What can I expect tax to be???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

tax on the 2.0 is around 615
    582 for a 1.9

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭pog it

Not bad then is it really? Are there any disadvantages to going for one of these lexus? do they give trouble at that age?

Mpg for a 150bhp car on them is woeful!

it's a 1988 cc engine so tax is 614 for the year.
Iv heard the is200 is fairly hard on petrol about 25 mpg. So might be a problem if you do big mileage.

no there a well built car (its a toyota with a nice badge) beats a 3 series in all areas

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

also things like suspension components can be pricey on the IS200, they're a very well built car but don't buy one if you can't afford the maintainance.

Are you sure? I have heard many people say the 6 cylinder toyota engine is lacking power delivery compared to 6 cylinder BMW engines found in a 3 series.

Not a coupe, megane three door. There is no such thing as a megane coupe.

Driving that 1.4 is also about as rewarding as trying to swim in porridge.

Not a sporty car at all really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

Ah colm, you'd have to go for a Mivec if you had €4k to blow on it :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

not a huge amount of nice Mivecs around for under 4k even these days. That GR has a nice maintainance record and has been well looked after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

it would be worth the extra bit for a mivec though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,917 ✭✭✭B00MSTICK

Picking on people with a GS/GR/GX (non-mivecs) is a favourite past time of colms.

He's right though, they're all the same looks wise and the OP doesn't sound like they'd be too bothered whether it has Mivec or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Oh definitely. there's a nice manual MIVEC just put up on donedeal actually.
    http://www.gumtree.ie/dublin/48/43451048.html
The seller has just bought it, (off a guy I know) it's not the cleanest in the country by any means (as the ad states) and of course it's 2.0 on the log book (as the ad states for some reason), but the car has some nice extras like the MOMO airbag wheel, Evo Enkei wheels and various bits.

It may sound gay lads but I know a lot of girls in my area driving 1.4 Skoda Fabias! They drive lyk 1555cc's when u get the MPi model! most now u can get for <3500.

I'd never buy a car off someone that doesn't even know that Mivec/VTEC/Turbo doesn't appear on log books! :pac:

He hasn't owned it long enough to have done any damage (only bought it a fortnight ago I think) I'm guessing he didn't do his homework on the insurance...

Yeah I wouldn't want a high maintenance car so maybe in my price range I should stay away from lexus. Also moving from a polo to a lexus is a huge leap psychologically- I need something different to bridge the gap!

Ah dear maybe I should just increase the budget and hold onto the car for longer.

God those FTOs are sexy, but they're not getting any younger. The autobox is supposed to be fantastic, I'd get one tomorrow. The sexiest car for under €4000 has been missed by everyone here. In other words, I can't believe nobody mentioned the Punto.

Does it start? That's what I want to know. Apparently Alfas were designed by an artist as an ironic postmodern installations. In other words they were always supposed to fall apart as soon as you turned the key.
