Not sure if this is the right spot or not but here goes.

If I copy a bunch of my jpegs to a DVD or CD (disk), will I be able to "play" them through a bog standard DVD player onto my TV screen?

Do I have to use some programme to get them on the disk in a way that they'll play?

    Absolutely not.

For our purposes there are two kinds of DVD. One is a DVD video, it can be played on a DVD player. One is a data storage DVD, it can be read by a computer. A DVD with images on it is a data storage DVD and as such will not run on a DVD player.

So what you'd need to do is create a video slide show of some sort and have that burned to the DVD as a DVD movie. You could probably make the video with Windows Movie Maker, and there's loads of programs for creating DVD movie discs.
