I have had a request by another poster to post this thread.

Going unreged for this, long time poster (on boards not on the wedding forum) and my OH might see this. Basically I am planning on proposing, but I do not want to buy a ring in advance for a couple of reasons. First, I am afraid of buying the “wrong” ring and my OH being stuck with something that she might not have chosen, she would never say if she did not like it. I also like the idea of us going together to buy it. Secondly, she is trying to lose some weight and I know that she would like to get a ring when a little slimmer so that the ring would not have to be re-sized.

Anyway, I would still like to give her some sort of token of the occasion or something that she can wear until we get the ring. I know that she would like a charm bracelet, so my idea was to buy a charm bracelet and two charms, one a heart engraved with the proposal and the second a charm with a small diamond. The idea is also that I can but charms later on to mark other occasions in our life, e.g., wedding day, kids being born etc.

So any opinions on my idea? You can say if you think it is crazy. Also anybody know where are good places to go and get good quality charms, bracelets etc.? I have been looking at Thomas Sabo but if you could point me in the direction of other websites or places that would be great, based in Cork. When I have popped the question I will come back and reveal my secret identity

Ohh, good luck with the proposal, we're suckers for a romantic story here so do come back and tell us.

As for the charm braclet, I'm not a huge fan of them but I think I'm in the minority of women there so I say go for it. You can get ring charms for charm braclets http://www.juicycouture.com/shoponline/accessoriesjewelry/jewelry/prodY0A5T?ecid=JCALR[INSERT_11_DIGIT_SITEID_HERE]&ncx=n&uEm=%%ef%bf%bdfiliates%%&ci_src=14110925&ci_sku=Y0A5T

Alternatively, I saw something I thought was really cool at the weekend. A silversmith in Kenmare (about 90 min drive from Cork and a cool place to propose maybe?) made bangles as prizes in a triathlon. He had ingraved the winning times on the bangles, but you could get "will you marry me" or some significant phrase for you guys on it. It has the plus of looking like a very large ring so the symbolism is intact.

    Hi there!

Big charm bracelet fan myself! Fiance bought me one for our 5 yr anniversary last year with 5 charms :D Its a Thomas Sabo bracelet and charms are from there too. They have a huge collection, you should be able to find something there. If you are based in Dublin you should get it in College Jewellers on Nassau Street, if not do a search on the net.

    Lovely idea by the way!!

    Lovely idea!

You can get any kind of plain type of bracelet and then the charms can just be added on.

You don't need to get a "brand" of charm bracelet. I know the Pandora ones are very in a the moment but I personally think these will date......

    Thats a lovely idea!
I have 2 sweetie bracelets with charms from Links of London. One plain silver and one with turqoiuse stones and I love them. They were presents from my godmother, one was for my 18th, so they mean a lot and I've just bought one for my god daughter. Have had one of them for about 4 years and I wear it daily but it still looks good as new.

The cork store in Brown Thomas is very overpriced. A lot cheaper in England or through sterling on the website...and even cheaper again in the duty free store in Heathrow. And they'll give you the discount even flying between London and Cork.

A charm braclet is a great idea and something she will have forever. Good luck with the proposal!

    Think that's a lovely idea!

I've heard of people giving a "dummy" ring and replacing it with the real thing but it would be so nice to have the bracelet as a keepsake!

Let us know how it goes :)

That is honestly one of the sweetest idea's I have ever heard of. I have tiffany charm braclet that my BF bought me last christmas, he has since bought me one charm for it and hopefully we will add more for other big events :)

I am sure your OH will love this idea and I love the engagement charm idea, that charm is really simple and pretty.

Best of luck with the proposal. Please let us know how it goes.

I'm probably a bit late with this but Ti Sento do nice charm bracelets I think. They even have a charm of an engagement ring!

Not sure where you're based but I know that Seoidin in Ennis stock them...

By the way, I think it's a really great idea. I would love that!

Okay so it was me, your friendly GAA mod who was going to propose. I was going to do it two weeks ago, we had a weekend away booked in the scottish highlands. But my OH's uncle passed away, just before so I had to postpone until yesterday. She said yes so that was good :D

I went to Thomas Sabo and bought a silver link charm bracelet and the following charms

No I bought it in the shop. Thomas Sabo standard silver link chain, I think.

Can you tell me where the shop is?

Ah okay, sorry I went in Glasgow. There must be somewhere in Ireland, if you search on the Thomas Sabo website you can see stockists. The shop I went to was a dedicated Thomas Sabo shop, but there were plenty of other places that just stocked some stuff. For some of the charms I ordered off the website, they are delivered from Germany
