Has to be selecting a winner and not following through

Depends how you define "had considered". There are all manner of mug punters who believe that they considered backing an outcome if it even crossed their minds as a possibility instead of having resolved to do so. This way they manage to convince themselves that they have more of a clue of what they are doing.

I especially like those who make a selection then say something to the effect that they (the player / team / horse) will probably screw up, and when they do they say "There what did I tell you" :)

If betting seriously then missing a +EV bet that you realised was such *ought* to be worse than losing a +EV bet you made. This is because in the former you behaved in a losing manner by giving up an edge but in the latter you made the correct decision but missed out do to variance. But emotions don't quite to cohere that well with such intellectual realisations.

I have a feeling this could run very close....

I think backing a loser is worst, even though i missed a 16/1 win bet for a horse I tend to back, 16/1 place bet (about 4/1), picked the wrong one of two PW-E tips, and a 9/2 winner I picked last night but didn't follow through on this morning when the chips were down in the bookies.:(

This is what got me thinking what other people think.

not backing the winner you considered...frustrating as hell...

lol at the people picking not backing the winner they considered.
If you seriously considered it. then you would of backed it. most of the time people change there minds and have a rant when they were originally right.
Obviously doesn't apply if you were trying to back it and couldn't make it in time

Agree, thats what I thought the second option meant anyway as for someone who changed there mind that doesnt really count for me all it means is you had no definitive view on the outcome and probably shouldnt have been betting on the event at all if that was the case

Only one involves losing so I thought it would be pretty straight-forward.

Definitely backing a loser is more disappointing. If you consider something and back out and get proved wrong that's a lesson learned. Gambling effectively involves achieving a level of consideration and conviction that you're disciplined to follow.

It's far more disappointing to back something you've considered and confident about and lose the money. I'm shocked the poll says differently.

So an experiment, you'll be disappointed if it doesn't win. I, having considered your tip, will be disappointed if it does as I'm not betting on it?

How about when your internet connection goes down just as your bet is supposed to go on a winner, and you don't get the bet on !!:(

Mostly terrible responses so far bar the few people who take their betting seriously. Answer is always backing a loser. If you spend two/three hours looking over a race and you make your shortlist and identify a horse that you think has all the conditions to suit and the right price available for it, and you can identify negatives about all the other horses in the race, and then your selections comes nowhere, then that is the biggest dissappointment in the world!

As for the people whio cant decide which price wise selction to go for and end up picking the wrong one, i can only laugh!!

Normally I don't like to make too many bets on a weekend so I'll consider quite a few and there have been some really really ball breaking times here when i've tipped team at 5/1 or more to win only to second guess later on and they take the ball and run with it. I've found those times far far far more annoying then betting on a loser

Messing up by not thinking, the worst example was AFC Championship game last year Pittsburgh v Baltimore 66/1 Troy Polamalu first touchdown scorer, 8/1 anytime. Never copped he was 66/1 to score last also. Got a few quid on the 8/1 chance but still felt like a muppet. My own fault, wasnt thinking

There are obviously two types of gamblers and a whole mixture of the two in between.
    • Gambler1
Logical, with satisfaction gained from successfully selecting a winner through determination and graft.
    • Gambler2
Impulsive, enjoy the highs and lows that come with living on the edge.

Logically, your right. But taking into account the posters who enjoy the thrill of walking blind into tricky situations is something you dont seem to account for. Personally, I have to fight the impulsive side very hard, and I suspect a lot of others do.

If you're a professional and need the income to pay the bills, fair enough. You have to first get the percentages in your favour and then be prepared to stick your neck out.

If, like 98/99% of people you just like a gamble, I'd stick by "If you don't bet you can't lose."
