Thinking about colouring my hair but honestly have no idea what I should be asking in the hairdressers.

I have shoulder length black hair that have grey stands appearing. I really just want to cover the grey and stay near my natural colour.

What should I be asking for? I hear terms like low-lights, highlights etc.

    Thanks so much:)

If you only have a small amount of gray and are sticking close to your natural colour I would just use a semi-permanent home dye. My hair sounds the same as yours and I use the nice'n'easy one that washes out in 24 washes, you can't go too far wrong with it, it won't really change the colour of your hair but will cover grey. If you don't like the results try the hairdresser afterwards.

I agree with Huntington. The Nice N Easy shade of black is very natural looking. I used Ferias black once and it was a a very dark blue-black colour. It made me look very washed-out which I found a bit odd as my natural colour is black!

A home dye will set you back a tenner whereas a salon would most likely charge €50 plus. If you do decide to go with a salon don't be afraid to ask loads of questions when you are booking. I found Lorraine in Junaberry to be very good, she explained a lot about how she would go abour dying my hair and the whole process. I wouldn't worry about highlights/lowlights etc if you just want to cover greys.

hi i'm a hairdresser and if you only have a few grey coming through we do a masking service for people who just want to cover the grey but want to retain their natural colour . be careful with home hair colours ALWAYS do a patch test an allergic reaction to hair colour is not pretty . any salon that you go to should insist on a patch test before they colour your hair as its law . [SNIP] masking is an additional 15 euro on top of a blow dry or cutting service but at least you will have peace of mind that you are getting a professional service .

Thanks very much that sounds ideal.
