Well.. it sort of depends on what kind of things you want to do!

Portlaoise is a big enough old town.
There is a Gun Club that meets, well used to anyway, in Kavanaghs.

There is a Bridge Club that meets up weekly if thats more your bag.

If golfing is more your bag, there is apparently a Golf Club down the way http://www.portlaoisegolfclub.com/index.htm

There is, of course, the local GAA, and you are now close to O'Moore park where many a big GAA match is played. http://portlaoisegaa.ie/

There is someone on these here boards trying to start a Book Club:

There is a Walking and social Club:

    There is a heritage society:

So.. yeah.. you need to elaborage :p

    Right..

    Well, its still fairly vague!

I mean, what kinda group are you after?

Like, there is a mother and toddler group based out of the Library.

There is also a musical society and an ameteur dramatics association, both, I think, based out of the theatre.

There is also volunteer work in the form of the Red Cross branch and the Rotary Club of Portlaoise - Probably too old for you though.

The best Bar for folks your age is probably Coppers or Kavanaghs, steer clear of Egans .. and avoid Club 23!

If you're of a rural background, the local macra is just off the main road.

There used to be regular..ish boards.ie Drinks + meet Ups, but then I joined and they stopeed :(

They do do (heheh.. dodo) belly dancing in the school as evening adult courses for women. There was 3 different levels last time I got a leaflet through the door. It was Egyptian raqs, not tribal though.. as I understand it, Tribal is the more popular one.

The Drinks thing, yeah, being on your tod does make socialising that bit more awkward - if the boards.ie meetup thing happens, it would help!

Beside Esker Hills there is a Leisure centre which does Aqua arobics in women only courses.
    Check this link out: http://www.portlaoiseleisurecentre.ie/health.html
It also does other gym stuf like spinning.. which I always found amazingly pointless but women seem to like.
The heritage Hotel has its own gym an' all, but I'm not sure if they do classes like the Leisyure centre.

    Hi,

I think with all new endeavors the hardest thing is walking in the door. I'd say most classes would cater for beginners.

    Hi joe,
    What day do you train?

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭joe_dunne

    Hi,

We train on Fridays in St. Mary's Sports Hall from 7:30 till 9:00

If you have any more question my number is 085 1699 103.

Maybe the presence of a girl (right Sinead, right??) would get some of the boards lads to turn up ha ha

    All the best

Hey I'm new to portlaoise ( and ireland in general for that matter) too and I came across this thread and thought I'd ask for help too. I came here some days ago as an aupair and as I'm not really good at meeting new people and generally being shy, I'd be grateful for some advice. I'm twenty and I enjoy a variety of acivities, to many to list them all in fact. Books and animals are certainly among them as well as going out( a bit uncomfortable about going on my own around here yet) or just stroll around. would be great to get to know some people around here and make new friends.:D

    thanks

    Alexandra

(the family I'm staying with lives in Maryborough Village by the way)

There's is a film club in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, every other Wednesday night, turnout is small but you're guaranteed to see some films that won't be screened in the multiplexes.

Another thing to consider would be an evening class, I did one earlier this year and met some nice people.
