    Hi all

I hope to joining you all in September to do the Journalism. My parents want me to stay on campus accommodation but its so expensive. A friend told me it has even risen in price since last year - is DCU immune to the recession?

I would love to live on campus too, to be close to everything, but I was shocked to see the prices....is this some sort of cartel they are running? My other friends will not be paying as much in other colleges, I was gobsmacked!

For the cheapest option, try find a house with some of your friends. This isnt the most convenient though, cus depending on where you end up, you'll need to walk/bus a bit to college every day. It does encourage you to study more though. Living on campus meant i went home for lunch breaks and stuff and just stayed there :P

There's a lot of benefits of staying on campus though. Very close to shop, gym, library, clubs and socs activities and of course lectures. Good internet too. But security there are a bitch, so if youre a party animal, head for Shanowen (across the road from DCU, more student apartments, but more expensive again).

I'll always suggest on campus to first years though, i had a great year there.

I don't really know anyone in DCU yet, most of my friends are going to UCD or DIT actually. I want to live near the campus, so maybe its the price I pay for convenience!!

    Hi !

Well, I'm going into final year of Journalism in DCU in September and the best advice I could give you as a first year is to stay on campus!
I didn't know anyone going to DCU when I started and I got accomadation in Hampstead on Campus with 4 other girls, and I still live with 2 of them. Campus is the best way of meeting people, is WAY closer to the bus stop than Shanowen for going out at night and is brilliant for rolling outta bed 10 minutes before lectures. The security people are lovely and seriously, it is a great move. Even Larkfield, which is just for 1st years, is really good craic, and there's always parties and stuff to go to.

Is Shanowen mainly for older students, or would there be first years aswell?

First years can apply too, as far as i'm aware. Do it soon though to beat the crowd, as the place is already filling (i've paid my deposit already, as have all my friends).

I got my place on the DCU online housing list, it's at:
    http://www.findahome.ie/colleges/LoginCollege.aspx?college=DCU&pm=1&co=6
The password is 'student'. I'm in JR myself and it's good fun, always a bit of craic when you're around like-minded people! I lived barely off-campus last year so it was no hassle meeting people, close to some of the bigger supermarkets too and a stones throw from Matt Weldon's pub which made staggering home nice and easy :D On-campus may be great for meeting people, but you'll still have fun even if you're not living within the confines of DCU.

Best of luck on Monday, hopefully we'll see you around our way soon!
