What is the system in NI and how would my licence transfer?

I'm moving to Belfast shortly, and I was hoping to have my full licence before leaving but I failed my test. I was wondering what use my provisional would be up there, and whether it would take a huge adjustment to pass the test up there. Could anyone help me out?

Your learner permit is only valid in the republic, so it's not going to be worth much up north.

Think you'll have do you test again in the Republic as I was reading yesterday you have to be resident for six months before you can apply for a GB provisional licence, I expect it would be the same in Northern Ireland.

If the test up north is identical to England then it will be harder than the test here it probably has a few differences but one that I'm certain of is that it involves a parallel parking manoeuvre.. and as already stated your Irish LP is not valid outside the ROI and I would imagine neither is your theory test pass certificate :(

Does the OP need to do a theory test for a UK provisional licence or LP????

The UK test include a number of procedures not required on the irish test -l ike doing an emergency stop and parallel parking and their theory test is two sections, multiple choice and a hazards perception test. It also costs a little bit more.

Do they have restricted R plates for people who've just past their test in the NI or was that just a rumor?

They have to have 'Restricted' plates up for a year after they have passed their test and can only go 50 MPH on motorways. Most plates have an 'L' one side and a 'R' the other side.

On another note why isn't parallel parking part of the Irish test? It is a good and essential skill to have like I am asking my instructor to show me how to do it.

You are probably right as it was a good while ago I looked up what the 'R' meant.

Nope, You can use your Irish licence in any EU county though if you live there more then 6 months you have to transfer it over or is that cars?

In all of the UK inc. NI you get your provisional first before you do the theory test
