Ok so here looms the big aul' 6th Year this September. Biology is definitely one of my strongest (and favourite) subjects and I was looking down the road at Medicine. I just want to be certain it's what I want to do. I can't think of any other subject or field I'd like to get into so I spose that's good. Could anyone direct me to anything that would let me know what it would be like studying Medicine? Be that a website or book?

Biology-wise, how much does it change at college in comparison to the Leaving Cert.? Is it much more difficult (just heard there on the radio there's a lot of Science drop outs... )? I hope this is the right place to put this topic, seems like ye'd all have the very best info on boards.ie on this :)

Get some work experience! If you can. That would hopefully tell you a lot more than any website. The material isn't insanely difficult but the workload is huge. You'll need a good work ethic, good self discipline and the ability to keep your work/social life balanced so you don't burn out.

I dropped out of science at Trinity before I started medicine. Really didn't like the course. Our first biology lecture largely consisted of the sex life of the vole. There were 450 of us on the course and not a whole lot of guidance. Guess it was kind of a shock after leaving a school of about the same size. The subject choice system was odd. I wanted to do physics and they said ah no you didn't do it at school you won't manage, do geography instead. I wasn't given a chance to think it over. I only stayed a couple of months though so can't give you a good view of it. I've heard mixed opinions of it.

Check out the applying to medicine sticky, might find something useful there :)

You should try to get someone to sneak you into a couple Medicine lectures!

The course known as Biomedical Science which is run by DIT, NUIG, Cork IT, and that IT up in Sligo (wherever the feck that is... ... :P ) is the one that you should go for. In my view, it's the one that everyone who wants to do mdicine - but can't - should b doing. The degree you get from it is well-recognised in industry.
