Ford Focus won't start after oil and filter change

2000 Ford Focus 1.6 petrol won't start after oil and filter change. I took out sump plug drained oil, then took off filter. Put on new filter and filled engine with 5w/30 oil. Is now filled to the max, but not above. Nothing else changed.
Car turns over but not a sign of starting, was fine before. When I turn ignition on before starting, the oil and engine light come on and stay on.
    Any ideas

Any chance you knocked off a multi plug while you were at the filter? Possibily the crank position sensor?

I don't think so. Do you know is that to the right of the filter looking down on the engine? I noticed that connection but didn't know what is was. Seems to be connected OK. I thought maybe it was the oil pressure sensor. My dad just got someone to have a look this morning and says it would need to get a reader to see what codes the engine is throwing out.

As far as I remember thats where it is, so any dodgy connection there will stop it from starting, maybe unplug it and plug it back in a few times to clean and reseat it.
TBH it really does sound like something was knocked off when you were under the bonnet, really big coinsidence otherwise. Is there an immobilisor? Did you try a spare key?
The oil light staying on with the ign switched on and engine off is correct, after all its not generating any oil pressure.

I would think that I must have bumped something but really don't rememeber doing it. I expected the oil light to be on, but the orange engine light should not be on, correct?
I was at my dads house while doing so no spare key with me. Battery wasn't disconnected and no fuses seemed blown.

The engine light may be on until the engine starts aswell, I'm not sure.

Not sure there's a lot more to be done online. A mechanic would have a look at anything that may be moved during an oil change and then just start normal diagnosis like checking for spark and petrol.

Let us know how it turns out..

Do you normally run a focus with 5w 30 oil? Im pretty sure it should be 10w 40. (i used to own one)

To me it sounds like an ignition problem most likely got to do with an immobiliser.

Probably nothing to do with it not starting, but thats the wrong oil.

A Focus should be 10w40 or 15w40. (Owning a Focus for 2 years with many oil changes)

The 5w/30 oil conforms to WSS-M2C 913-B ford specs. As per haynes manual. Should be OK but I'll try and confirm.
Local mechanic to take a look tomorrow for me with OBD reader. I'll post fix when known.

if the car was jacked up, you might have triped the safty cut of switch.all you have to do is press it down again to reset it.

Hope you managed to get it going again.

What was the fault as a matter of interest?

The wrong oil wont stop it starting, but it will cause serious problems down the line. u need to correct grade for Fords.

Sorry for no solution posted to now. Basically car sat for a week and I was then back at my parents and tried with spare key and it started. Now in that week a mechanic had a quick look and my dad had tried to start on couple of days no luck. So looked like key/immobiliser problem. Once started both keys worked fine.
Took car out that day and stopped and started a couple of times OK. That afternoon 30 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon wouldn't start again. Neither key would work. Got towed into garage and when they looked at it on Monday turned out fuel pump gone. Have back on road now and seems OK.
Seems was coincidence with oil and filter change.
Just need to sort radio code as the one in my book isn't working.

Just shows how a coincidence could have had you blaming an innocent mechanic for causing damage through no fault of their own.

    hey i have a similar-ish problem.

I dropped my 99 ford focus to a garage the other day. They told me it was the fuel pump so they got a replacement but it still wont start. They said there isnt any pressure. Does anyone know what this is down to? and will it be expensive ha!

Whats the serial number of the radio. It should be on the top of the casing probably starting with a M

No expert but sounds like there's some blockage in the fuel system...

Once I managed to get the radio out with the help of 2 coat hangers I found the correct code. The code put in the book was wrong by one digit.
    Saga ends here I hope.

Two years of owning a focus and you have'nt read the handbook because Ford recommend 5w30.
