Lord Mayor's Cup

Unbelievable scoring this year with two 66s leading the way. I thought 76 was a very low cut off for the 64 guys going into matchplay. Although two of the 77s crept in. Course was playing easy enough on a fine day. Lotta youngsters in the field, some very young!

Not a fan of the course myself but the greens were unreal and the general maintanence was top notch. Pins were on slopes but that was to be expected. It seems that the vast majority of tee shots require a fade. 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, 16 and 18 spring to mind - with the hard fairways I really felt you had to move the ball to get in any kind of good position. To my eye there was a lot of OOB on the right side, and the way the holes were shaped it seems to be a course where someone who turns it over off the tee might struggle. Was dreading playing 12 all week and birdied it :D

    Was anyone else playing?

Managed to qualify with a very shabby 76, missed easy birdy chances on 16 and 17, aswell as double bogeying the last from the middle of the fairway.

Long and short game were sharp but my irons were brutal. Also managed to rekindle a nice little back injury I've had for a few years too.

I agree too that the course was in great condition and the greens were immaculate, thankfully my putter was hot for the first time all Summer. Got myself a tough first round draw with a 4 handicapper from Westmanstown.

Well you'll have to beat these guys at some stage, be it on Tuesday or Saturday ;)

I was pretty schocked by the difference moving the limit from 5 down to 4 had. I guess it's in line with the times - there seems to be very few Junior competitions that are still 5+. Hard to argue with, given the improvement in Senior standard and the dropping h'cap cut-offs.

I think the standard of play was more to do with conditions really, there was barely a puff of wind and the greens were so true it was unreal, aswell as the rough being quite short. Interesting also that the two lowest qualifiers were 5 handicappers.

At the end of the week the best man will win, whether he plays off 4 or 9. Matchplay can deliver some very strange results.

Good luck to all who qualified.

Didn't play as got cut down to 3 a couple of weeks ago. Was quite looking forward to it and even had the week off work.

Looking forward to hearing about the match play on here. Best of luck to all taking part

I don't Paul but I know Lawrence Craddock (3 and 2) and Mark Irwin (1 up) got through from Malahide.

I also know that one of the leading qualifiers (66) made a first round exit.

OMG! How annoyed would you be?

Yeah there's a couple of Irwins from Malahide. I assume they're brothers?

there's John, Mark, Gary, Brian and Paul. John has won the Lord Mayor's before. He's been living in Orlando for the last few years and i'm very surprised to see his name down in this. He is obviously back on holidays.

Early exit for me, lost on 16 to the 2007 champion.

Never really got going and went 2 down early on, 3 down after 9, should have easily won 10 and 11 and missed tiddlers of putts. Won 12 and at that stage should have been even but was still 2 down. Missed a 4 footer on 13 to hand the hole and went OB on the next for him to go dormy 4. Won 15 but made a bollix of 16 to lose 4 and 2.

He played solid and made few mistakes, I putted like a dog and that was the difference. Very nice guy and really enjoyed the game.

A nice guy and a decent player. Played with him recently in the Lucan Junior Scratch cup. Will take a good player to beat him this week

Yeah, I saw a good bit of him on Sunday. Steady-Eddie alright. Hard luck F22!

There were a lot of complaints about the last group last night. Apparently one of the guys was outrageously slow. The chap he beat looked at the end of his teather coming off the last. Happened me in Junior Cup earlier in the year and it's not nice.

Oh yeah, and the other chap who had 66 on Sunday bit the dust last night as well! Really mad stuff - everyone was so impressed with their scores.

Well done Sheet, best of luck later

Well Done SS, hard luck F22. Did you win well?

As for the slow player, was he from Clontarf? When you play someone like that, there is no point in trying to speed the match up or speed your own game up to compensate... my attitude is that you take your time and play at your own pace and while he is taking an age, i'll either retie my laces or just keep looking around and let the mind drift off so that your not thinking how long this fella is taking. If the pace gets really slow and you get warnings, at least you'll know that you can go back to your own pace and that it won't effect yur rhythm or your game.

Best of Luck today, hope the rain stops!!

the slow player was definitely not from clontarf , he is from royal dublin and he won again tonight, the clontarf player he beat is a quick player and did not enjoy the slow play

He played behind me in qualifying and didn't strike me as slow at all, a matchplay tactic perhaps. What's the lowdown Sheet?
