Hey guys i was wondering if someone could lend some advice on this topic. Im going to florida in october and would love to buy a macbook for college while im there. Iv heard you get screwed for tax when you try to bring things like this home. Aswell if i try to bring it home i hear they can check when it was bought from its serial number aswell as simply checking how long the laptop has been in use, therefore hitting me for tax. My idea was to buy a refurbished macbook from apple and have it delivered to my hotel or buying a second laptop from the local buy and sell of florida. Would this move avoid being stung for import taxes seeing as the machine will have been used for some time?

Also if anyone knows the names of buy and sell esque things in florida that would be great :D

I got stuff delivered from Frys to my hotel when I was in LA a few years ago, was no problem. Iirc, NewEgg won't accept international credit cards for security reasons. You could also try BestBuy, either in store or online.

Was thinking of buying a Compaq in Bestbuy, and bringing it back to Ireland. Great prices.
Will mainly use for watching DVD's/surfing/email etc.
What do I need to consider in terms of:
a> Power? As it should be dual voltage, do I just need a simple USA-Ireland/UK 3 pin convertor?
b> playing European DVD's? I assume I can set it to play those, as I don't have many US DVD's
c> anything else I have not thought of?

    Thanks in advance! ;)

I hope you are going to pay all the relevant taxes when you arrive back to Ireland.

Have a new US netbook, how do i know if I need a voltage convertor when charging? what info should i be looking for on the charger brick?

The charger brick will usually say it can take voltages ranging from 110V to 240V, if it does, all you need is one of those cheap plug converters to convert it from a 2 pin american plug to a 3pin Irish plug.
