Asking on behalf of the lady.

Moneys tight now and the normal do is just over €100.

So dye from the bottle, good idea/bad idea?? any particular brands better than others? Any horror stories or recommendations?? Basically never been used here before and looking to hear frequent home dyers opinions:confused:

    Thanks in advance!:)

She could try henna. It's natural with no nasty chemicals. I use it to cover greys and give my naturally black hair a more reddy-brown colour. It doesn't cause the allergy reaction that some people get with dye. If you get pure henna then it's ok to put it over already-dyed hair.

If she's dying her hair black watch out for the chemical PPD. Some people are allergic to it and have very extreme reactions. It's only found in black dye though. Here is some more information. PPD allergy.

Another possible tip would be to get a semi permanent dye. Especially if it's a shade you've never used before as a semi permanent will wash out so if you don't like it you won't have to endure it for as long. Also, always do a patch test.

    Mrs JB here,

Ive never dyed it at home before and to be honest Im really really nervous. I usually get an all over dark brown with red highlights on the T bar by my hairdresser. Just I fine the colour is only lasting 3 weeks and its 100 euro that I dont have anymore.

My main worry is something herendous like my hair falling out due to dying over previously highlighted hair or something. At the minute its been about 8 weeks since my last colour and my hair looks terrible, really needs a lift. Ive heard mixed reviews on garnire nutrisse.

Thanks a mil for the advice :)
what Im thinking is I will get the local hairdresser to cut my hair (dry cut) and then try a semi permanent dye. The joys of new found unemployemnt ;)

    Hi Mrs. Bravo,

Don't worry about home dyes wrecking your hair unless you're trying to lighten your hair. Dyes are usually good for your hair and give it a condition boost.

Great!:) No defo not trying to lighten it, at the minute its gone a horrible orangey colour and of course its patchy due to the highlights and the sun and over use of the ghd. Probably a fairly dumb question but because Im fairly patchy at the min dark brown underneath in patches, light brown/orangey out front, will the dye come out oddly over this??

Cool about the condition boost, my hair is defo in need of repair:)

I don't highlight my hair a lot so I'm be no means an expert with this but I'm reasonably sure that the colour would be lighter over the highlighted parts.

I currently have extensions in and the stylist put four different shades in, then dyed all the hair to match my colour. The result is different shades with the brown hair extensions being darker than the lighter coloured extensions.

    Cool, sounds nice :)

I will report back after I dye it and hopefully not be bald:eek:;)

You'll have to shop around to really get the one to work best with your hair and that will take time. You can do it at home, but it will never turn out as the color on the box so it is a bit of a gamble. Plus, I think it will not be as shiney and healthy looking as the salon.

I use home dye all the time. Paying €100 for a semi permanent is nuts imho. Garniers Nutrisse will be perfect it gives a brilliant shine afterwards. I tend to use 2 bottles though as ive quite thick hair. Get your bf to do it if he's feeling brave and comb it through to make sure its evenly dispersed through your hair. Oh...and dont forget the all important strand test. Just take a small piece of your hair test it with a small bit of dye and see if it dissolves/breaks.

In eight yrs I personally have gone down the home dye route and I swear by it.......I must say I swear by 100% colour by garnier or Herbal Essencess.....I used that L'oreal Excellence and oh dear god disaster (I went for a brown and came out tobacco green)........

for the highlights I reccommend the loreal set inc highlights.....you put the dye in first and then the highlights.....simple!!
