Some good theology in a modern format:

Not a format that does much for an old rock and roller like myself, but its good to see someone with some passion for Christ feeling moved enough to put it into song.

As someone who writes songs myself though, alot of the songs written are shall we say, concentrating on the negative. I do it myself if I write about spirtual matters. I can write poetry that praises, but when it comes to song, its usually about someone who's got it wrong. I've noticed alot of other Christians that do this too. Bizarre so it is:confused:

Anyway, I'm going off on one.:)

Yes, there is a danger in being negative too much. The correct balance is seen in the Scripture itself - a large bit of both positive and negative.

As to rock, maybe Steve Camp is closer to your style?

    Positive:
    Unfailing Love by Steve Camp

    Negative:

^^ Thanks for trying, but Its not my cup o' meat:) The whole religious contemporary stuff really falls short of the mark for me. In all honesty, I preferred the rap.:)
Some Gospel, or some hymns, or even the odd song by contemporary artists about their spirituality I like. Anything I've heard from the contemporary religious music movement is awful to me.

Something like 'Serve Somebody' by Bob Dylan is pretty cool.

Yeah, I don't know what it is about a much of modern day church music, but in my experience, it seems to mostly consist of fairly shallow lyrics that hang on some neat musical hook. Bemusement, I can imagine, would be the reaction by many people after their first exposure to the happy clappy repetitions that account for the music in my church.

A reflection of modern culture, I guess. We certainly need more Charles Wesleys to write theologically literate worship lyrics for today.

There are, however, a few notable exceptions. When we sing Stuart Townend and Keith Getty's "In Christ Alone" I have to remind myself it is a modern song rather than one of the classic hymns.

    The Lyrics:
In Christ alone my hope is found,
    He is my light, my strength, my song;
    this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
    For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
    This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
    Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
    Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

Getty, BTW, is from Lisburn. Here's a video of him and his wife performing the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLy8ksqGf9w

The song below (Unfortunately I've yet to record it, so lyrics is all you have for now), is a personal testimony as to my personal struggle with the pleasures of this world and seeking selfish desires. For a point in my life, this was at opposition to Christ in my life. Thankfully, I have conquered a certain amount now, but always call on Christ as my shield. Don't want to get complacent now do I:) I think it represents my struggle quite aptly. The second verse refers to that pest of a concience that just wont leave you alone, and leaves you feeling guilty. Three roads are usually presented. 1. Get rid of concience. 2. Fool the concience. 3. Let it break you down, so that you can be built up. Thankfully, 3 happened in the end, and I've presently got the builders in:) Chorus is basically Christ saying: 'Jimi, you have the tools. Just flippin use 'em. Anyway, see what yis think.

    REMEMBERING PARADISE

I remember when I was the loner,
I was up to my neck in myself.
I was sinking without any water,
I was so far gone on myself.
Then you came and you tamed the old player,
You rescued me from my own mind.
    While looking at everybody,
It was me I was looking to find.

I remembered my faith in Jesus,
and I got on my hands and my knees,
and I asked the great Lord for forgiveness,
but he already answered my plea's.

    Chorus
He said, 'Son I've already shown you, that you're never going to die.
If you could just clear out your concience, your rivers would never run dry.
Wisdom is using your knowledge, and knowledge you have in supply.'
    Remember Paradise.

Its more than a random occasion, that strikes at the turn of the tide.
While my wisdom is slowly depleting, my knowledge is still in supply.
I forget in a week or a moment, the enlightenment I have recieved
Then I drag myself into depression, and then hear the great voice and believe.
    Chorus
He said, 'Son I've already shown you, that you're never going to die.
If you could just clear out your concience, your rivers would never run dry.
Wisdom is using your knowledge, and knowledge you have in supply.'
    Remember Paradise.

Now I've come to the end of my story, but my troubled mind carries on.
It attacks me without any warning, but I'll never be too far gone.
I'm gonna keep on trying and trying, and remember my Gods solemn words,
and I'll keep getting stronger and stronger, God willing I'll be reassured.

    Chorus
He said, 'Son I've already shown you, that you're never going to die.
If you could just clear out your concience, your rivers would never run dry.
Wisdom is using your knowledge, and knowledge you have in supply.'
    Remember Paradise.
