I would like to create a home network so I can share a external HD connected to my desktop. I have tried doing this before with no luck - think there were compatibility issues.

    Here is my systems:

    Desktop: Dell Dimension 5150
    Windows XP
Connected to 'Broadband' via ethernet cable to a netopia router

    Router: Netopia 3347wg

    Laptop: Dell Lattiude D600
    Window 7
    Connected to router wirelessly.

I would be very grateful if somebody could give me a step to step guide on exactly what I should. Cheers

Should just be a case of marking the drive in question as shared and making sure that all computers have the same workgropu name as sometimes this can cause a problem.

In order to change the work group name right click on my computer and click "properties" It's under one of the tabs on the new window. I'd imagine it's something similar in Windows 7 but not sure exactly as I haven't used it.

Also, make sure XP is patched to service pack 3.

I'm getting it to work from the desktop to the laptop. But the laptop can't see the desktop. Could this be something to do with the Firewall on the Desktop? I have McAfee Security Centre...

On the Desktop computer also I checked if I enabled sharing for my documents. but the sharing option can't be highlighted - see in attachment below
