It takes a lot more than money to start a business.

What are you interested in? Any ideas yourself? Online or bricks?

totally agree with sparatus a lot of businesses have been started with less and become huge enterprises but it has to be something that you have a passion for.

What are you interested in, have you spotted a niche? Reminds me of this weeks dragons den when there was a bloke there who started a window cleaning business and ended up on 6k a month, fantastic guy just with a passion to succeed.

    Hey spartacus,

    I absolutely understand that.

I am a student but only have college lectures for >20 hrs per week (business course).....Up to now i usually work with my dad after college and sometimes do 50+ hrs a week (pretty much unpaid)....so im thinking of going out on my own instead......to put it lightly i do not shy from hard work and would enjoy putting in 80+ hrs p/w into a business i could call my own and make a few bucks.

Personally i have always been interested in services based ventures.
But anything that involves selling i suppose would suit me.

Looking forward to yours (and everyones) suggestions.

    Duncan

Service based ventures and anything with sales is a fairly large area, be more specific. What do you do now for example when working with your dad? You would be better making a business of something you know than just trying to jump into something you have no knowledge of, especially starting off when you are learning, half the battle is being interested in what you are selling or the service you offer and not just picking it cos you think it will make money when you arent in anyway excited by the service or product you are offering.

Thanks axwell, i appreciate that advice, but im just looking for a few idaes here to get thinking and get the ball rolling......of course i have dream businesses in mind but these require a far greater capital investment....maybe the title of the thread should be changed to "if you had 2500 to start asmall business what would you start up:D"

To be honest i would be quite happy running most types of business as it wouyld bemore for the challange....thats what im interested in : business.....so what type of business really for me isnt a big concern.

Would be great to hear some actual suggestions which will spurr me on and give me something to think about.

Well see even changing the title of the thread is asking what would I, or someone else do..but that depends on my background or experience. So you should be focusing on yours, for example do you know anything about ecommerce and selling online, if yes then maybe setup a website selling a product or service, if you dont then your looking at providing a service or product offline. If you are looking to provide a service then what do you bring to the table, what are you an expert in that you can offer people and that they will find useful?
Again you say you work with your dad a lot so what do you do there, what can you take from that and offer people, or maybe add a new twist or slant to it. I dont know what you work at so i cant offer suggestions based on it but starting off you are better to stick to what you know as its what you will do best. I think you will find it hard for people to give you exact suggestions as if they were that good the person would do it themselves, a lot of it is going to come down to what you know and can offer.

The Sunday Times has a "how i made it" column most weeks in the business section adn i think they've compiled them in a book - it's all about how people started off from the very beginning. might be worth a read to give you some ideas

Look for things inside your college - how do students get past exam papers/is there a possibility of publishing and retailing them? How are student events organised/is there a possibility of breaking in there?
Can you think of a business or businesses that would pay you to bring their product/service to students in your college? etc etc etc
Is there any way of tying/relating the hours you're doing with your dad to a service that could be offered to college students?

There are loads of books out there on starting businesses, developing creative thought etc etc.... Why not put in a bit of leg work and see if anything hits you in the face.

In the meantime, mind your 2,500 - make sure you have it in the best interest earning accounts or whatever - and try to grow it - maybe take a part time job while you're thinking about your business - if you can grow your 2.5 to 5 it'll be easier to start something.

how about doing another course at your college uni etc to make you more employable, or to get an inside knowledge in something...
e.g. a welding course - you could then make woodburning stoves or something

    edit:
there is also health and safety courses available, i think its called NEBOSH which costs around £1000, you could then teach helath and safety to construction workers, students etc, big money in that

When you decide upon your venture. You should also check out any grants that might be available, local enterprise boards will often offer small grants to start up businesses and match your seed capital (although think the minimum investment is around €5K)

also I remember another post where someone mentioned that social welfare offers a €1000 grant to new business start ups, had a look on the welfare.ie website but couldnt find a reference to it though

    Regards
