these are probably really stupid questions but i am stuck, please help me.

    Account type should be POP.
    Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com
    Outgoing server: smtp.live.com

And enter your full email address as the username.

Let me know if this works.

    Try this:

    - Go to Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts

    - Click on the "Outgoing mail server" menu at the bottom and choose "Edit server list"

    - Click the Hotmail server and check the "Use SSL" box.

Works for me. The first time you send mail it will ask for your password. Enter it and check the save to keychain/remember box.

no, sorry. but that isnt working. it just keeps saying that the server connection times out.

When you ticked the "Use SSL" box did you also enter your username (full email address) and password?

If that doesn't work, I don't know. Perhaps your ISP is blocking those ports. Maybe quit Mail and try it again.

Hotmail is crap anyway tbh. I'd recommend switching to a Gmail account.

Who's your ISP? - most ISPs block outgoing mails, but you can use their server for sending, or use a different port on your email provider's server.

Let us know your ISP and someone here will give you the settings you need.

PS: as mentioned, Gmail is miles better than Hotmail, which was good in the past, but has now been left way behind.

    According to the internet:

For yahoo mail you need upgrade to yahoo mail plus to get
the full pop3 service for access from email applications.

And use the new yahoo mail servers address.
    * Incoming Mail Server (POP3): plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
    Use SSL, port: 995
    * Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication

Yahoo don't given free POP3 access on most of their email accounts. But it varies depending on what version of Yahoo you are using. I've heard that Yahoo UK (@yahoo.co.uk) registered emails do have it. You usually have to enable it first in your Yahoo settings.

I also came across this a while ago. I haven't tried it though so I'm not sure if it works.

i'm having a problem setting up my hotmail on a mac book pro

I've opened mail and incoming mail window pops up

    i have selected the following

    Account type: POP
    Description: *****
    Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
    User Name: *****
    Password: ****

error message that comes up - the POP server "pop3.live.com" is not responding....

where am i going wrong? I saw a mention of outgoing mail server I can't select that on this screen. TBH the only thing I think i'm doing wrong is the incoming mail server cause everything else is at my end (i.e. user name password)

is there some other setting somewhere else I need to fix?

My network is working by the way:)

If using UPC, no matter who you get your email from, you need to set your outgoing (SMTP) server to smtp.upcmail.ie Leave the port set to 25.

You could also try <your email provider's SMTP server name> on port 587, but UPC may not support this (some ISPs do, some don't) - if they do, it's handy, because if you have a laptop and end up using different ISPs in different locations, you won't have to keep changing your SMTP settings.
