Engineering forum under soc will give the best answer

Mechanical is tied with manufactoring in general and cars and planes - all that side of it

Civil is to do with the built enviromment - roads/bridges/houses/buildings and all of that.

They overlap in areas aswell naturally

Something I was told on work experience. While the 2 overlap, technically, civil engineering is everything to do with the surface of the earth downwards and structural is everything to do with the surface of the Earth upwards!

Another few difference is that there are no jobs in mechanical engineering but there are ABSOLUTLEY no jobs in civil engineering.

Still it's a good degree to have and things will surely pick up in 4 or 5 years time when you are finished in college

Op, dont even take that into consideration when deciding what you want to do, do what you like/want to do. If you have the degree, you will find a job

Mechanical engineers build missiles; civil engineers build targets.

i opened this thread to see if someone had made this joke

    lol

on a more serious note, im doing mechanical engineering right now

first year of both courses is the same and sometimes the 2nd as well, after that mechanical engineers usually learn about automation, thermodynamics, robotics etc

i dont know about civil, but its probably to do with, structure, envoirnment, waste disposal, recycling, sustainability, energy conservation, urban planning/development
