just want an opinion on a car i'm considering to buy. It's my first car and to tell the truth i'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to judging the price of a motor. The car is a peugeot 307 2005 SR 1.4 petrol 5 door, 42,000 km, 12 months full warranty and rac cover. it is nct'd till november 2011. it is 7500 euro cash upfront. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance

    sorry it's a 05.

yup that sounds like a very good bargain. That car would sell for about €9000-€10,000

Thanks Carly. I don't have to make a decision until wednesday and plan to check a few more cars out before then though. Any more opinions ?

2 be honest i'd pefer the Toyota 2 the Peugeot simply because the the engines last forever and have u noticed the pedals on the Peugeot there very close together u wouldn't want to have wide feet and also the Peugeots seem to burn more petrol than the Toyota

you might want to wait and see whats on offer at Tom Hogans in Galway next weekend, there having an auction to clear out the stock after liquidation.

Considering that the op doesn't know much about cars it probably isn't wise buying from an auction where it is very easy for a novice to buy a lemon with no comeback or warranty.

OP I think that is expensive for a 4 year old 307. Just looking at carzone I spotted these which are a year younger for similar money:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200926194410009
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200929194630021
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200921192884824

Remember these are asking prices so you should be able to negotiate a discount for buying straight with no trade-in. Definately worth shopping around.

Ranked 158 out of 159 cars in the Top Gear 2005 owner survey.

    http://www.topgear.com/content/features/stories/2005/11/stories/01/5.html

I would consider a different car. Maybe one from the Top 10.

I spent 20 + years working with Peugeot, last year I got a Honda for the wife, what does that tell you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

sounds overpriced to me, you should be able to get one of the class leaders in the same year for the same money. the 307 is junk and should be priced accordingly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭ant043

right guys it has basically come down to three cars. The one above on the first post = http://www.nissan-dundalk.com/used_car/used_car_detail.aspx?id=70325 price = 7700 I made a mistake in the first post.

    choice 2 = http://www.toyota.ie/assured-used-cars/car/9fcdcc32-d905-440b-9b35-4b6b1da3ff49 price = 8200

    choice 3= http://www.holcroftmotors.com/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200913192302251 price= 7700

I'd really appreciate people's opinions on which one represents the best value.
I will be commuting from Dundalk to UCD roughly two to three days a week from september. I'm just wondering if diesel would be much better value over petrol. The third peugeot has a diesel engine.

Many thanks again for the comments.

    bump.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Bumping after lass than a half hour:rolleyes:

The diesel would obviously be the best of the ones listed. Otherwise you can get a far better car for a similar outlay. As mentioned, 307's aren't the best place to put your money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The 05 petrol @ €7,700 is way overpriced imo.

Given the choice of the three I'd go with the 05 diesel, the 1.6 HDi is a fine unit and that car looks to be higher spec than the other two also. I would try and get them to lower the price though.

OP just in comparision the bigger 407 1.6 HDi could probably be bought for similar money to the three cars you looked at:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200931194735176
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200928194556365
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200818188739410

The 407 looks better value than those 307s you looked at.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 675 ✭✭✭ant043

I appreciate the comments guys. Parents have been buying peugeot new since the early 90's and have never had a problem with any of them. Maybe just luck anyway where is the best place to buy peugeots in ireland ?

just one more question guys i'd really appreciate a response. I'm now looking at a fourth model it's 06 peugeot 307 1.6 hdi diesel, 39000 miles, 5 door hatchback, 1 lady owner, 6 month warranty. The price i'm getting it for is 7500 euro. I'm thinking this is good value. Any thoughts on this. Thanks very much.

Same engine but in a far more reliable car for a very similar price

That looks really interesting. Good find. Any more links for a diesel preferably 06 hatchback for less than 8000. It's my first car and i'll probably be using it to travel to college so i'm not looking for anything too big.

so the focus looks a possibility. I'm just wondering what other reliable diesel models i should be looking at. What's the citroen c5 like ?

I had a 307 and it was the worst purchase I ever made - Because your parents have been buying Peugeots since the early 90s means you probably don’t have much experience with other brands therefore I think you should listen to the other posters. It is recognized to be the worst Peugeot built in recent times. There's a couple of links to review but I suggest you take a look on the web yourself.

    http://www.crushmy307.co.uk/

    http://users.bigpond.net.au/skystar/peugeot307/

The Diesel engine is meant to be pretty good but there are huge electrical problems, and problems with interior fit and finish. Handling wise it is one of the worst cars I have ever driven. I also ad the clutch replaced 3 times before it hit 30k and I had break failure twice. i had an on going problem with the landa sensor.

If you are starting college this year I assume you will have this car for several years - the 6 or 12 month warranty will do nothing for you - when this runs out this car will cost a fortune.

If you do not know a lot about cars my advice is to listen to other people here because most people here have a general knowledge of what is a good car or a bad car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

If it was my money I'd be looking at the following (i'm including supermini's because its a first car and all that)

    Focus
    Fiesta
Astra (can be gotten seriously cheap and they are decent)
Corsa (new model - you might be lucky)
    Leon
    Octavia
Golf (but you'll pay for the privilege)
    Corolla (1.4 d4d is good)

A C5 might be a bit too big if a first car. Cheap doesn't always mean a good buy too

That is probably a 90bhp version which is not as nippy as the 110bhp version.

True, but as a first car it should be fine...and better than a 307;)

My gf has a 02 307 1.4hdi diesel and had relatively no problems with it(apart from replacing bulbs) It has covered approx 38000 miles in last 18 months averaging 500 miles per tank of fuel. If you are looking at one make sure the switchgear is working properly i.e indicator/wiper stalks. These had a tendency to be problematic and leading to phantom indication usually on a roundabout:D.

The father has a 03 C5 2.0hdi diesel being used as a taxi for the past 15 months and again only issues have been bulbs and usual wear and tear!!

maybe they both been lucky given some of replies:);)

    P.s 1.4 hdi = 75bhp, 1.6 usually 110bhp. I think!

Peugeot 207 2006 1.4 hdi 40000 miles 12 month warranty. 7300 euro. Good value or bad value. I'd value any input.

I forgot to mention what is the 207 like as a car. Does it get any better reviews than the 307. Any experience ? Thanks again.

    On the 307 - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=296

The 207 doesn't fare much better.

I don't know myself. It seems to get a good review here on that website. Anyone driving a 207 or know people that have one. Thanks for any help.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

My buddies girlfriend drives one. She bought it as an ex rental. Currently the dash is like a Christmas tree there's so many lights on. They've been on ages and it's still running...my girlfriends aunt had a year old one prematurely snap its timing belt on the Fermoy bypass a few months back too. Both these cars are 1.4 petrols. Timing belt can just happen but the electrics are something I'd avoid.

Shame because they are a nice little car

Nearly the whole peugeot range are nice looking cars but i wouldnt buy one in a million years!! I have seen 1st hand problems with the 206 (petrol), 307(petrol&Diesel), 407(Diesel) and c5 (1.6HDI) not sure what the bigger diesel is like though. All above (apart from the c5 maybe) are horrible drives too
Buy a focus diesel if you can i cant stress enough stay away from Peugeot!!!

OP, you've had some decent advice. Up to you to weigh it up and decide if it's a good deal for you and worth the (higher than average) risk
